JOB DESCRIPTION

POSITION: Recovery Fitness and Recovery Services Coordinator

PROGRAM: Fitness and Nutrition Program

SALARY: $24–$25 per hour; full‑time, non‑exempt

Overview

The Recovery Fitness and Recovery Services Coordinator supports both the Many Roads to Recovery (RCO) Project and the Fitness and Nutrition (FAN) Program by coordinating wellness, fitness, nutrition, recovery support, community engagement, and culturally grounded programming for Native individuals and families.

This position develops, implements, and facilitates activities that promote healthy lifestyles, support long-term recovery, strengthen community connections, and address health disparities affecting American Indian communities, including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity, and other chronic health conditions.

The ideal candidate will have experience in community-based wellness programming, recovery support services, health promotion, and working collaboratively within the American Indian community.

Responsibilities

Recovery and Wellness Programming

Plan and facilitate weekly wellness, fitness, and nutrition groups for individuals participating in recovery services.

Provide education on physical activity, healthy nutrition, disease prevention, and healthy lifestyle practices.

Develop culturally responsive wellness activities that support recovery, healing, and overall well-being.

Collaborate with contracted instructors, health educators, and community partners to provide specialized programming.

Encourage participation in healthy activities including fitness, recreation, sports, and nutrition education.

Recovery Community Organization (RCO) Activities

Support Native individuals and families in their recovery journey through wellness-focused programming and community engagement.

Coordinate and assist with monthly Recovery Fun Nights.

Assist with quarterly Recovery Powwows and other cultural recovery events.

Coordinate and support the annual Recognition Feast honoring participant accomplishments and recovery milestones.

Complete Peer Recovery Coach training and certification, if not already certified.

Fitness Center and Facility Operations

Assist with activities in the MAIC fitness center and gymnasium.

Ensure a safe, welcoming, and culturally supportive environment for participants.

Collaborate with MAIC administration regarding facility use, safety procedures, and security plans.

Community Partnerships and Outreach

Develop and maintain partnerships with community agencies, health providers, treatment programs, and recovery organizations.

Connect participants with resources that support recovery, health, and wellness goals.

Participate in community outreach, engagement, and recruitment activities.

Represent MAIC at community events, meetings, and partner gatherings as needed.

Data Collection and Reporting

Collect, monitor, and report participant attendance, participation, and program outcomes.

Maintain accurate records, files, and documentation required by funders.

Attend grantee meetings, trainings, and funder-required meetings.

Assist with grant reporting, program evaluation, and outcome tracking.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

Associate degree required; Bachelor's degree preferred in Health Education, Public Health, Exercise Science, Nutrition, Human Services, Social Work, or a related field.

Minimum two (2) years of experience working in a physical activity, fitness, wellness, recreation, or health promotion environment.

Minimum five (5) years of experience working with the American Indian community.

Understanding of health disparities affecting American Indian populations, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, and related health conditions.

Experience working with individuals and families affected by substance use disorders and recovery services.

Strong written, verbal, facilitation, and organizational skills.

Ability to maintain accurate records and participant data.

Successful completion of a criminal background check.

Preferred Qualifications

Peer Recovery Coach Certification or willingness to obtain certification.

Experience coordinating community programs, wellness activities, or special events.

Fitness, nutrition, health coaching, or wellness certification.

Knowledge of culturally based healing and wellness practices.

Experience working with grant-funded programs and outcome reporting requirements.

The Coordinator will support implementation of the Native Fitness and Nutrition Program and Many Roads to Recovery Project through:

Weekly fitness, nutrition, and wellness groups.

Monthly Recovery Fun Nights.

Quarterly Recovery Powwows.

Annual Recovery Recognition Feast.

Participant outreach, engagement, and support.

Collection and reporting of participant and program outcome data.

Development and maintenance of community partnerships.

Promotion of healthy lifestyles, recovery, and community wellness.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Strong understanding of recovery-oriented systems of care.

Knowledge of fitness, nutrition, health education, and wellness promotion.

Ability to engage participants from diverse backgrounds in a respectful and culturally responsive manner.

Excellent interpersonal, communication, and relationship-building skills.

Ability to work independently and collaboratively with staff, community partners, and participants.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office and data management systems.

Commitment to supporting Native individuals, families, and communities through culturally grounded wellness and recovery services.
