At GSK, protecting the health of our workforce is fundamental to delivering our mission to positively impact the health of 2.5 billion people by the end of 2030. The Occupational Health Centre of Excellence supports this ambition through specialist medical leadership, clinical governance and assurance, helping to enable safe and sustainable work and contributing expert medical insight to the management of workplace health risks.
Reporting to the VP, Global Head of Occupational Health within GSK's EHS structure, this role provides Occupational Medicine leadership across Europe, contributing specialist medical expertise to the management of workplace health risks, while ensuring robust clinical governance and safe, effective and compliant Occupational Health services.
Success in the role requires strong influencing skills, the ability to align stakeholders across countries and functions, and the judgement to balance global standards with local regulatory and business requirements.
In the UK, this role holds accountability for the governance, quality, performance and continuous improvement of Occupational Health services delivered to UK businesses, including leadership of service strategy, provider performance, clinical governance, operating model development, financial sustainability and alignment with business priorities.
As a member of the Occupational Health Leadership Team (OHLT), this role helps shape and deliver the strategic direction of Occupational Health across GSK, providing leadership to support the management of health risks in the workplace, while ensuring robust clinical governance and high-quality Occupational Health services to support GSK’s mission and strategy.
Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Act as the regional medical leader for Occupational Health across Europe, championing GSK’s Occupational Health ambition and leading through a matrix of site teams and functional stakeholders.
- Provide expert Occupational Medicine leadership and consultation on workplace health risks, working in partnership with Industrial Hygiene, Toxicology, Ergonomics and other EHS subject matter experts to advise on the potential health effects of workplace exposures, appropriate health surveillance programmes, fitness-for-work requirements and other occupational health interventions.
- Build strong, influential partnerships with leaders, employee representatives, HR/EHW, EHS and technical specialists including Industrial Hygiene and Toxicology to align Occupational Health priorities across countries, sites and functions; use data and insights to inform decisions, manage competing priorities and mitigate health-related business risks.
- Lead and/or contribute to regional strategic improvement programmes (e.g., EHS risk reduction programmes, business model enhancements, capability building, quality and governance improvements), translating strategy into measurable outcomes.
- Monitor changes in Occupational Health legislation, professional standards and emerging health risks across the region, ensuring appropriate governance, compliance and organisational readiness.
- Establish and maintain an effective clinical governance framework across Europe, including oversight and assurance of internal and third-party Occupational Health providers, covering statutory health surveillance, fitness-for-work assessments, case management, referral pathways, competency requirements, clinical audit and other core Occupational Health activities.
- Monitor and review service performance and key metrics across the region; identify trends, escalate risks/opportunities and drive continuous improvement through effective influence and communication.
- In the UK, hold accountability for the performance, quality, governance and continuous improvement of Occupational Health services delivered to UK businesses, ensuring services are safe, compliant, effective, financially sustainable and responsive to business needs.
- Collaborate within the regional and global matrix (Global Head of OH, other Regional Medical Directors/Heads of Occupational Health and functional partners) to shape and implement strategic priorities, sharing insights and lessons learned.
- Support development of the regional OH matrix community, including coaching/mentoring, knowledge sharing and strengthening capability in a matrixed organisation.
- Line management of aligned reports.
- Represent GSK externally as required across UK and Europe with key stakeholders, advisory boards and industry groups, bringing forward best practice and influencing thought leadership in Occupational Health.
