The Institute for Ethics in Technology at Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH) investigates the ethical questions raised by technological change. Rooted in analytic philosophy and working closely with engineers and computer scientists, it asks how emerging technologies, especially artificial intelligence, reshape society, and how they can be developed and used responsibly. Founded in 2023, the institute is young, growing and internationally connected. It offers researchers the freedom to pursue their own agenda in a genuinely interdisciplinary environment.

YOUR TASKS

  • Independent research in ethics of technology, AI ethics, or moral, legal or political philosophy
  • Teaching of four hours per week, mainly ethics courses for engineering and science students
  • Contributing to the institute's research agenda, events and international collaborations
  • Co-developing applications for third-party research funding
  • Contributions to academic self-administration and to the development of the institute

YOUR PROFILE

Requirements

Completed scientific university studies with PhD in philosophy or a related field

# Desired knowledge and personal skills

  • Research record or clear publication potential in one or more of the areas above
  • Excellent written and spoken English; knowledge of German is not required
  • Teaching experience, ideally with students from non-philosophical disciplines
  • Ability to work independently and in interdisciplinary teams, with strong organisational skills
