Senior Associate – Funds Credit Risk

Financial Institutions Group (FIG)

Institutional Banking & Markets (IB&M) Risk Management

Location: Sydney or Melbourne

We seek a dynamic Senior Associate to join our team in Non-Bank Financial Institutions (NBFIs) Risk, focused on the Funds Finance sector. This is an opportunity to play a key role in a specialised area of Institutional Banking, working alongside experienced risk professionals across Australia and international markets.

Institutional Banking and Markets (IB&M) is the Line 1 function managing the Commonwealth Bank’s (CBA’s) relationships with major corporates, banks, NBFIs, government clients and institutional investors, providing a full range of capital raising, transactional and risk management products and services.

NBFI Risk falls within IB&M Risk Management, which supports IB&M by providing Line 2 oversight and risk management of IB&M’s activities in Australia and internationally in New Zealand, London, Amsterdam, New York, Singapore & Shanghai.

Do work that matters

The successful candidate will be responsible for identifying, assessing and managing the risks associated with Funds Finance and other credit exposures to Funds. This includes superannuation funds and managed funds across various asset classes including private and publicly listed equity, infrastructure, real estate amongst others.

The successful candidate will be expected to exercise a credit approval delegation over their own portfolio of clients, as well as in support of the wider Funds and NBFI risk team.

Working in partnership with IB&M Line 1 teams and supported by risk management colleagues, you will be responsible for ensuring that all business is consistent with the banks’ risk appetite. This involves risk analysis, decision making and deal approvals, as well as the ability to identify emerging risks and develop strategies to mitigate them.

About the team

You will join a global team of talented and highly collaborative risk professionals who have responsibility for risk analysis and decision making across the NBFI client set, including Funds Finance. Products covered include subscription finance, asset based (NAV) finance and structured hedging and experience in these products and clients will be advantageous but is not essential.

A genuine desire to continually seek better and more efficient ways of doing things will also be critical in the success of this role.

In any given week you will:

  • Being the risk adviser in a deal team environment, analysing clients and structures, preparing credit submissions and providing risk decisions or recommendations. This includes giving guidance on deal structuring, approval processes and policies, and risk management strategies.
  • Monitoring and analysing market developments and global industry trends, and providing guidance and advice to management on risk management matters related to funds financing;
  • Owning a portfolio of clients and being responsible for credit risk matters associated with those clients;
  • Developing relationships with stakeholders including internal business units within IB&M and Risk;
  • Collaborating with other risk management teams to ensure alignment of risk management strategies across the organisation;
  • Driving continuous improvement within the team across both individual activities and process / policy / procedure simplification projects; and
  • Being an integral part of a very collaborative team with a high value placed on team culture.

What will help you succeed in this role?

  • Experience in credit risk management at a financial institution, with experience in credit decisioning and approval, and/or NBFI and Funds Finance exposure an advantage;
  • Relevant educational qualifications
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to identify, assess and mitigate risks;
  • Good communication skills with the ability to act as the voice of risk with internal and external stakeholders;
  • A curious mind and a desire to contribute towards continuous improvement;
  • A willingness to use judgment to make and defend conscious and evidence based risk decisions; and
  • Proficient problem-solving and decision-making capabilities.
