What's cool about this job?

We are searching for a Senior Data Engineer to join our Data Engineering organization and take a leading technical role on the domain-centric team that serves Finance.

The data this team produces is the financial picture of the company. We own the pipelines and models that turn raw data from our billing, payments, and financial systems into the trusted assets Finance, BI, and the wider business use to track revenue, subscriptions, and the metrics the company is reported on. This is a modeling-heavy role: most of the work ahead is designing and evolving the dimensional models behind those assets, and you will be the one deciding the grain, how history is tracked, how a restatement is handled, and how we prove a number reconciles back to the system of record.

The role also reaches beyond your own pull requests. You will lead projects that span the team, scope and break down technical work, and partner directly with Finance system owners, BI, and analysts - understanding what they actually need, pushing back where the request and the data disagree, and setting the direction the rest of the team builds against.

We apply software engineering best practices to our data work. You will build, test, and deploy changes through dbt with CI/CD inside our centralized Unified Analytics Model (UAM), and build ingestion pipelines in Python or Go that run on a Kubernetes-based ETL platform, landing data into BigQuery on Google Cloud Platform.

We also expect you to work with AI. Our engineers use agentic development tools such as Claude Code every day, and we want someone who is genuinely good at it - who uses these tools to move faster on real problems, and who reviews, tests, and owns every line that results. We have no appetite for unreviewed AI output in a pipeline that feeds financial reporting.

This role sits as a critical foundation for WP Engine. As our organization increasingly builds agentic systems that reason over and act on data, the quality, structure, and reliability of the data layer becomes critical. You will be shaping the bedrock that these systems depend on.

Our culture is renowned; we believe it is meaningful to hire the best and ensure that we provide an environment where the best get better. If you are great at solving problems, a hard worker with excellent interpersonal skills, and enjoy working across different time zones and cultures, you may be the person that we are looking for!

The day to day.

  • Design, build, and evolve the dbt models in our Unified Analytics Model (UAM) that turn raw financial and billing data into clean, tested, well-documented assets - owning grain, conformance, historical tracking, and the modeling standard the rest of the team follows. This is the core of the role.
  • Write and optimize complex SQL for transformation, validation, reconciliation, and troubleshooting across large datasets.
  • Design, build, and maintain end-to-end data pipelines that extract data from source systems and load it into BigQuery, writing ETL jobs that run on a Kubernetes-based ingestion platform.
  • Monitor pipelines and respond to alerts using data observability tooling, performing root cause analysis and implementing durable fixes rather than patches.
  • Lead the delivery of multi-sprint data initiatives across the team: scope the problem, break it into technical work, sequence it, and see it through to production.
  • Partner directly with Finance system owners, BI, analysts, and product managers to turn reporting requirements into reliable data solutions.
  • Build reconciliation and validation into what you ship, so that published financial assets can be traced and defended against the source system of record.
  • Maintain high-quality metadata across pipeline outputs and data models, ensuring assets are well-documented and discoverable for both human consumers and AI-driven workflows.
  • Raise the bar in code review - on correctness, modeling quality, testing, and readability - and mentor engineers on the team through it.
  • Use agentic development tools such as Claude Code as part of your daily workflow, applying good engineering judgement to what they produce.
  • Contribute to documentation, runbooks, ADRs, and internal knowledge sharing, and participate in team ceremonies.

Your skills and expertise.

  • 5+ years of experience in data engineering, analytics engineering, or a closely related role, with a track record of owning significant data assets end to end.
  • Strong production experience with dbt - models, tests, macros, incremental strategies, and project structure.
  • Expert SQL - writing, debugging, and optimizing complex queries across large datasets.
  • Deep data modeling expertise. You can design a warehouse model suite from ambiguous source data and defend the choices: grain, conformed dimensions, fact design, slowly changing dimensions, point-in-time correctness, and the trade-offs between normalization and usability.
  • Experience building and maintaining ETL/ELT pipelines in production, utilizing Python, including monitoring, alerting, and root cause analysis when they break.
  • Hands-on experience with a cloud data warehouse, preferably Google BigQuery, including cost and performance awareness.
  • Experience with containerization technologies such as Docker..
  • Fluency with Git and development workflows: branching, pull requests, code review, and CI/CD.
  • Experience with agentic development tools such as Claude Code or similar AI-assisted coding environments, combined with the judgement to use them well - you review what they generate, test it, and take full ownership of the result.
  • Experience modeling financial data for company reporting - billing, subscriptions, invoicing, payments, revenue, or an equivalent domain where the numbers are externally consequential and must reconcile to a system of record.
  • Excellent communication skills, written and verbal. You can hold your own with a system owner or are able to explain a modeling decision to a non-technical
