Role summary
Join athenahealth as a Senior Engineering Manager to lead a newly formed engineering team advancing our Integration Platform. You will build and develop the team, guide technical direction, and own the delivery of scalable, reliable integration solutions.
Working closely with engineering, product, architecture, and operational stakeholders, you will help simplify healthcare data exchange and improve the experience of developers, customers, and integration partners. A key focus will be advancing automation, self-service capabilities, and AI-powered tooling to reduce integration turnaround time and improve engineering productivity.
Team summary
The Integration Platform is part of the athenahealth Data and Ecosystem Platform subdivision. It supports internal data exchanges and connections between athenahealth and laboratories, imaging providers, registries, health information exchanges (HIEs), payers, other electronic health record (EHR) systems, faxing services, and third-party vendors serving healthcare practices.
A core component is our proprietary HL7 engine, which supports more than 15,000 contexts, approximately 20,000 connections, and millions of subscriptions. These connections use protocols and connectivity methods such as SFTP, HTTPS, APIs, and VPN sockets, making scalability, performance, and reliability central to the team’s work.
The platform supports inbound and outbound HL7 connections, alongside custom integrations for specific customer needs. Self-service tools and a dedicated advisory team support the onboarding, development, and validation of new integrations.
The Chennai team will expand these capabilities through platform improvements, process automation, and AI-powered tools that simplify integration development, testing, and onboarding.
Essential job responsibilities
- Drive the adoption of AI-assisted development lifecycle (AIDLC) practices across planning, design, implementation, testing, and maintenance, with appropriate engineering review and quality controls.
- Identify and deliver opportunities for automation, self-service, and AI-powered tooling to reduce integration turnaround time and improve developer and customer experiences.
- Establish and track meaningful measures of delivery predictability, software quality, platform reliability, engineering productivity, and integration turnaround time.
- Lead the evolution of existing systems while supporting new functionality and maintaining operational continuity.
- Foster agile / AIDLC development practices and use delivery outcomes and team feedback to improve how the team works.
- Build, lead, and develop a high-performing engineering team, establishing clear goals, accountability, and a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement.
- Coach and mentor engineers through regular feedback, career development, and opportunities to strengthen technical and leadership skills.
- Own engineering planning and delivery for integration and faxing solutions, managing priorities, dependencies, risks, and stakeholder expectations.
- Partner with product, architecture, and engineering leaders to translate business objectives into a technical roadmap and achievable delivery plans.
- Guide architectural decisions and engineering practices that improve platform scalability, performance, reliability, security, and maintainability.
Additional job responsibilities
- Contribute to the long-term architecture and modernization strategy for the Integration Platform.
- Lead recruiting, onboarding, and talent development to build the capabilities needed for the team’s roadmap.
- Partner with operational and advisory teams to identify recurring integration challenges and translate them into reusable platform capabilities.
- Maintain productive relationships with internal stakeholders, external partners, and vendors.
- Support production readiness, incident resolution, and follow-up improvements that strengthen platform reliability.
- Evaluate emerging technologies and AI development tools through focused experiments with measurable outcomes.
- Share technical knowledge and effective engineering practices across teams.
Expected education and experience
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, or related field.
- At least 12 years of experience across software development and engineering leadership, including experience managing engineering teams.
- Demonstrated ability to build and develop teams, manage performance, and deliver complex software initiatives.
- Strong technical background in Java and experience designing, developing, or operating scalable enterprise software.
- Experience guiding architectural decisions, managing technical trade-offs, and improving software quality and operational reliability.
- Experience with agile development methodologies and continuous improvement practices.
- Familiarity with AI-assisted software development and opportunities to apply AI and automation to engineering workflows.
- Strong stakeholder management and communication skills, including the ability to explain technical concepts and trade-offs to non-technical audiences
