About the Role

Following an internal promotion, we're looking for a senior cyber security specialist to lead our technical team alongside the Deputy CISO. You'll help drive one of the sector's most active cyber programs, shaping and delivering initiatives that protect the University's mission-critical systems and providing trusted, specialist advice to senior leaders.

You will work closely with relevant managers and IT architects to research and evaluate procedural and technical solutions for the University's networks and systems, ensuring their ongoing security and effectiveness and the stable, continuous operation of the University's mission-critical systems and applications.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading the technical delivery of security platforms, including email filtering, firewall, intrusion prevention/detection, and VPN and host protection systems, from design through to operation.
  • Shaping and owning security policy and standards for new and existing security platforms and tools, setting a strong security posture and sustainable IT services environment for the University.
  • Providing expert advice on security within disaster recovery and business continuity planning, ensuring plans appropriately address security requirements to maintain the provision of services.
  • Guiding an agile way of working to manage, refine and prioritise the cyber activity backlog against risk and relevant customer and IDS priorities.
  • Evaluating emerging technologies and approaches, and partnering with IT architects to bring them into the University's environment.

A more comprehensive list of duties is available in the Position Description.

What You'll Gain

  • A large, active cyber program. Work across a broad portfolio of initiatives, with real exposure to strategy, architecture and delivery.
  • Skills, knowledge and training. Build depth and breadth across multiple security domains, supported by professional development opportunities.
  • Good people. Join a collaborative, capable team and work directly with the Deputy CISO and senior leaders.
  • Flexibility. A flexible work environment that supports how you do your best work.

About You

You are an experienced cyber security professional with deep technical capability and the credibility to influence senior stakeholders. You are comfortable leading a team, solving complex problems and turning risk into practical, well-prioritised security outcomes. Whether your experience has been gained in higher education or another complex organisation, you bring sound judgement and a collaborative approach.

Your exemplary communication skills ensure that you exercise a high level of interpersonal influence, with the ability to negotiate and communicate effectively with staff and customers across a diverse organisation particularly during the design, management and implementation of customer solutions.

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Strategic thinking, planning and analytical skills, with a track record of contributing to organisational outcomes and strategic goals.
  • Experience working in agile environments, including scaled agile methodologies and/or delivering through a matrix structure.
  • At least one current industry-recognised security certification (e.g. CISSP, CISM, CISA, CEH, CRISC) and/or relevant demonstrated industry experience.
  • Working knowledge of international information security standards and frameworks (e.g. ISO 27001, NIST).
