The Critical Projects Implementation (CPI) team is a project management and execution team that manages construction activity within operational data center spaces. The CPI team is tasked with critical infrastructure improvement projects to optimize utilization of space, power, and cooling within operational data centers around the globe. These activities are outside the scope of standard construction delivery and regular preventative maintenance tasks.

CPI is seeking a Senior Manager to lead an organization of managers (Data Center Project Managers and/or Area Managers) and serve as a senior liaison between our internal operational, technical, and business partners. Ideal candidates are strategic leaders who set vision and direction, and possess the ability to develop and deploy innovative solutions to address organizational challenges. This role requires a leader who can operate at scale — setting mission and long-term strategy while empowering their managers to own execution. The candidate will have a high bar for quality, must have exceptional written and verbal communication skills, and must be able to leverage data to define metrics, drive improvements, and influence decisions across the organization. The scope of projects the team manages includes improvement of electrical, mechanical, fire systems, and building automation systems. A fundamental understanding of these systems is required, as the leader will be expected to technically understand the work their teams execute.

You will set priorities and manage the workload and throughput of a multi-team organization, prioritizing programs based on impact to the business (Safety, Capacity, Sustainability, and Availability). You will be responsible for developing the metrics and mechanisms that measure your organization's deliverables and results against established commitments. You will drive improvements by building collaborative relationships with senior leaders across partner organizations to eliminate waste and increase productivity, and you will develop your managers to do the same by delegating, coaching, and leveraging individual strengths. You will also look around corners to identify new opportunities across existing programs and to expand CPI services into new geographies without impacting existing commitments.

If you are passionate about the Customer Experience; you think and act globally; and you want to contribute to the operational excellence of Amazon data centers, then this may be the challenge you have been looking for! Only those who have worked within a data center environment or similar mission critical space need apply.

  • Key job responsibilities
  • Set vision and strategy — Develop short- and long-term goals for the CPI organization, aligned to the growth and scale of the data center infrastructure.
  • Lead a team of managers — Hire, develop, and coach front-line managers; grow and retain top performers.
  • Own organizational delivery — Prioritize workload across teams by business impact and manage results against Safety, Capacity, Sustainability, and Availability commitments.
  • Define metrics and mechanisms — Establish the methodology to execute strategy, measure performance, and drive data-informed decisions.
  • Influence across the organization — Build relationships with senior technical and engineering leaders across planning, design, engineering, construction, commissioning, procurement, operations, legal, security, and finance partners to deliver priorities as a global standard.
  • Manage financials and headcount — Provide financial spend oversight and manage headcount scaling to match demand.
  • Look around corners — Identify improvement opportunities and expand CPI services into new geographies without impacting commitments.
  • Own organizational health — Maintain culture, operational management, learning and development, engagement, and career growth across the Americas region.

Basic qualifications

  • - 10+ years of team management and building (including coaching and mentoring) experience
  • - 3+ years of managing managers experience
  • - 10+ years of data center or mission critical facilities (example: hospital, military facility, public safety facility, etc.) experience
  • - 7+ years of project management (including scope, schedule, budget, quality, risk and critical path management) experience

  • - Knowledge of power distribution and data center mechanical cooling systems
  • - Experience leading cross-functional projects and implementing strategic initiatives
  • - Experience working in a fast-paced and ambiguous environment
