Description

Glenview, Illinois (pop. 48,705). The Village of Glenview is seeking experienced, engaging, and driven applicants for the position of full-time Senior Planner.

The preferred candidate will play a pivotal role in shaping the community’s growth as Glenview works on several significant large redevelopments, ensures the success of the Village’s Downtown Development District and The Glen Town Center commercial areas, influences short- and long-range planning initiatives, streamlines the development review process, and implements special projects in accordance with the Village Board of Trustees goals. The position requires the ability to independently evaluate complex issues, communicate technical information effectively, resolve problems, and manage multiple projects and priorities while providing responsive and professional service to the community. The ideal candidate is customer-focused, collaborative, and self-motivated, with strong communication skills and a passion for helping make life better for Glenview’s residents and local businesses.

Glenview’s Background:

Located in Cook County on Chicago’s North Shore, Glenview offers superior amenities and services, excellent schools, parks and open space, numerous shopping and dining options, and convenient proximity to local expressways, O’Hare International Airport and three Metra commuter train stations. Glenview is home to major businesses and attractions such as Abt Electronics, Illinois Tool Works, Kraft Heinz Research & Development Center, Hu-Friedy Group, CF Industries, Medline, Allstate Insurance Company, Old World Industries, Kohl Children’s Museum, and the premier mixed-use development, The Glen, a redeveloped 1,100-acre former Naval Air Station which comprises residential, retail, office, light industrial, recreation and entertainment uses totaling more than a billion dollars of investment.

Glenview operates under a council-manager form of government and is a home rule municipality. The Village President and six Trustees are elected at large, and the Village Manager oversees day-to-day operations of almost 300 employees in five departments: Management Services, Community Development, Fire, Police, and Public Works.

The Community Development Department contains the Planning, Inspectional Services and Engineering Divisions and provides land development, infrastructure, and economic development services for the community. The 50+ Department team members, including both Village staff and consultants, strive to make life better through the creation of great places to live, work and play; ensure Glenview’s built environment is safe; support the Village sustainability efforts and maintaining its natural resources and municipal facilities; and manages the design, review and construction the community’s infrastructure.

Requirements

Key Responsibilities:

  • Reviews and evaluates development proposals and planning applications for compliance with applicable regulations and standards.
  • Interprets and applies Village codes, ordinances, policies, and planning standards, and provides technical guidance regarding complex development and zoning issues.
  • Provides professional customer service and technical assistance.
  • Coordinates development review activities with Village departments, outside agencies, consultants, commissions, and others to facilitate timely and comprehensive project review.
  • Provides staff support to Village commissions, committees, and boards, including preparing reports and meeting materials, coordinating notices, attending meetings, making presentations, and facilitating discussions.
  • Prepares and maintains technical and official planning documents.
  • Supports planning, economic development, capital projects, and community development initiatives.
  • Assists with zoning administration and enforcement.
  • Participates in special, interdepartmental, and intergovernmental projects.
  • Conducts administrative reviews, permit reviews, and site inspections.

Qualifications:

Qualified candidates should have a master’s degree, with coursework in Planning, Public Administration, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Political Science, or Business Administration, plus four to six years of progressive experience required. Equivalent combination of bachelor’s degree education and experience would be considered. Certification as an American Institute of Certified Planner is preferred.

  • Schedule/Work Location:
  • This position is typically required to work during the hours Village Hall is open Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., based on operational needs, for a total of 40 hours per week. Attendance at evening meetings up to several times per month is also required. This position is exempt under FLSA.
  • Salary and Benefits:
  • The full salary range for this position is $99,377 - $139,129, with a targeted hiring range of $115,000, depending on qualifications and experience. The Village of Glenview also offers a comprehensive benefits package.
