Senior Software Engineer - Python and Data - Vice President

Citi’s Markets Technology group is seeking an experienced Senior Python and Data Engineer in Pune to join the engineering organization in developing high-throughput Regulatory & Market Manipulation Controls. In this hands-on technical role, you will code, architect, and optimize scalable Python backend services and data pipelines that process massive volumes of financial market data - including trade lifecycles, orders, executions, and risk analytics. Bridging software engineering with capital markets domain expertise, you will serve as a strategic partner to risk managers, trading desks heads and compliance teams, delivering automated control frameworks and leveraging modern innovations - including Generative AI - to enhance operational resilience and ensure regulatory compliance across Citi’s global markets footprint.

Responsibilities

• •Lead the hands-on design and implementation of high-throughput, low-latency Python backend services and SQL pipelines to ingest and process massive volumes of financial market data.
• •Translate complex regulatory mandates and market surveillance policies into robust, deterministic control algorithms and automated surveillance engines.
• •Partner directly with trading desks, risk managers, and compliance stakeholders to model end-to-end trade lifecycles, order workflows, and multi-asset risk analytics.
• •Conduct application profiling, database tuning, and SQL query optimization to eliminate bottlenecks, minimize latency, and maximize throughput.
• •Implement Generative AI-assisted solutions and modern automation patterns to eliminate manual operational activities and streamline control testing workflows.
• •Act as the technical authority for the engineering team, guiding architectural decisions, system design reviews, and modern CI/CD practices using GitHub and Jira.
• •Champion engineering best practices, conduct rigorous peer code reviews, enforce testing standards, and mentor engineers across the team.
• •Ensure technical deliverables strictly adhere to Citi engineering policies, enterprise security standards, and global regulatory compliance requirements.

Required Qualifications & Skills

• •10+ years of professional software engineering experience, with deep hands-on expertise building backend applications and data-intensive pipelines in Python.
• •Advanced proficiency in SQL , relational database design, query optimization, indexing strategies, and database performance profiling.
• •Strong domain knowledge in Investment Banking and Capital Markets, including comprehensive understanding of trade and transaction lifecycles, order management, execution workflows, and market risk analytics.
• •Demonstrated technical leadership capabilities, including conducting architectural reviews, mentoring engineers, and setting engineering standards.
• •Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with the skill to resolve complex, ambiguous technical issues and translate business requirements into robust technical specifications.
• •Excellent communication and stakeholder alignment skills, with the ability to partner effectively with both technical teams and non-technical business leaders.

Beneficial Skills & Qualifications

• •Prior experience building regulatory reporting or market surveillance platforms (e.g., MiFID II, CAT, Dodd-Frank, MAR, Best Execution).
• •Hands-on experience with containerization and container orchestration technologies (Docker, Kubernetes, OpenShift).
• •Exposure to distributed computing or data streaming technologies (e.g., Apache Spark, PySpark, Kafka, Solace, MQ).
• •Experience applying Generative AI APIs, prompt engineering, or LLM-driven tooling to automate workflows and extract structured insights from unstructured datasets.

Education

Bachelor’s degree/University degree or equivalent professional experience; Master’s degree preferred.
