Boston Dynamics is seeking a Senior Staff CAD Designer to join our Spot robot team. In this role, you will be a key technical resource for new product initiatives, designing ruggedized hardware required for the world’s most demanding environments. You’ll love working on a fun, collaborative, and talented team to support one of the world’s coolest robots.
Boston Dynamics is a world leader in mobile robots, tackling some of the toughest robotics challenges. For years, our awe-inspiring viral videos on YouTube have shown the world what remarkably capable robots can do. Now we are quickly becoming a recognized leader in automation solutions for industrial applications and warehouse logistics.
How You Will Make an Impact
- Mechanical Engineering Partnership: Collaborate closely with Mechanical Engineering teams to iterate on concepts, resolve complex design challenges, and translate early prototypes and functional requirements into robust, production-ready CAD models.
- Drive Mechanical Packaging & Architecture: Build and maintain master skeleton models, top-down assembly architectures, and complex packaging layouts for high-density electromechanical subsystems.
- Production-Ready Modeling: Design intricate mechanical components and assemblies using CATIA, focusing on structural enclosures, structural castings, injection-molded plastics, and machined components.
- Drawing & Detailing Ownership: Generate fully defined 2D engineering drawing packages compliant with ASME Y14.5 GD&T standards, including critical datum definitions, inspection dimensions, and surface finishes.
- Electromechanical Integration: Route complex wire harnesses, flexible cables, and flex PCBAs within constrained dynamic spaces alongside electrical and mechanical engineering teams.
- DFM / DFA Collaboration: Partner directly with prototype shops, tooling vendors, and high-volume suppliers to optimize designs for toolability (draft angles, parting lines, shut-offs, uniform wall thickness, and assembly sequencing).
- PLM & Release Management: Manage multi-level Bills of Materials (BOMs), configure change packages, and author Engineering Change Orders (ECOs) inside the PLM system.
Required Skills
- AS or BS in Mechanical Design Technology, Computer-Aided Drafting/Design, Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent vocational training and relevant practical experience.
- 7+ years of dedicated mechanical CAD design experience in robotics, consumer electronics, automotive, aerospace, or industrial automation.
- Advanced, expert-level proficiency in CATIA
- Deep practical knowledge of DFM/DFA for volume fabrication processes (injection molding, high-pressure die casting, gravity casting, precision CNC, etc).
- Extensive experience using PLM systems (Arena preferred; Windchill, Enovia, or Teamcenter) to manage BOMs, revision schemes, and ECO approvals.
Bonus Skills
- Expert command of ASME Y14.5 (GD&T) drafting practices and mechanical drawing creation.
- Experience conducting detailed tolerance stack-ups for precision-machined and molded assemblies.
- Hands-on experience with 3D wire harness and cable routing workbenches (e.g., CATIA Electrical / Harness Design).
- Advanced surfacing experience (Class-A or complex aesthetic curves) bridging Industrial Design surfaces to production tooling geometry.
- Detailed design experience with environmental sealing architectures (IP67/IP68 O-ring glands, elastomeric gaskets, ultrasonic welding, structural adhesives, and overmolding).
We are interested in every qualified candidate who is eligible to work in the United States. However, we are not able to sponsor visas for this position.
The base pay range for this position is between $115,000 to $130,000 annually.
