Job Title: Heavy Equipment Service Supervisor

Department: Service

Reports To: Service Manager

Position Summary

The Heavy Equipment Service Supervisor oversees daily shop operations at a construction equipment dealership. This position leads shop technicians, assigns and monitors repairs, and ensures work is completed safely, efficiently, and to company and manufacturer standards.

The supervisor coordinates with the Service Manager, Service Advisors, Parts, Warranty, Sales, and Rental departments to maintain workflow, communicate repair progress, and deliver equipment on schedule.

Requirements

Key Responsibilities

Technician Leadership and Development

  • Assign work based on technician skill, job priority, and available resources.
  • Establish clear expectations for workmanship, productivity, attendance, and accountability.
  • Provide technical guidance on diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, powertrains, and equipment diagnostics.
  • Coach technicians, identify training needs, and monitor completion of assigned training.
  • Provide performance feedback and assist the Service Manager with employee evaluations.

Shop Operations and Workflow

  • Review the daily workload and establish repair priorities and completion targets.
  • Monitor work in progress and address delays involving parts, approvals, technical support, or staffing.
  • Coordinate customer repairs, internal repairs, warranty work, preventive maintenance, and rental make-ready activities.
  • Communicate repair status, additional work requirements, and anticipated completion dates to Service Advisors and the Service Manager.
  • Maintain an organized shop with adequate tools, supplies, and functioning equipment.

Repair Quality and Documentation

  • Ensure repairs follow manufacturer procedures and approved estimates.
  • Verify that technicians accurately record labor time, diagnostic findings, parts used, and repair details.
  • Review completed work and confirm required operational checks are performed before equipment is released.
  • Ensure inspection and make-ready documentation is complete.
  • Investigate repeat repairs and comebacks, identify causes, and implement corrective actions.
  • Support warranty documentation, service campaigns, and safety-letter completion.

Safety and Housekeeping

  • Enforce company safety procedures and required personal protective equipment.
  • Conduct weekly toolbox safety meetings and address unsafe conditions promptly.
  • Ensure equipment walkarounds are completed before movement and spotters are used when backing, in accordance with company policy.
  • Monitor safe lifting, blocking, stored-energy control, and equipment operation.
  • Maintain clean work areas and proper storage of tools, fluids, and materials.
  • Report incidents, equipment damage, and hazards to the Service Manager.

Productivity and Cost Control

  • Monitor technician productivity, labor efficiency, overtime, and repair turnaround.
  • Compare actual labor with estimates and communicate variances before additional work proceeds.
  • Reduce avoidable downtime, repeat repairs, and unnecessary expenses.
  • Protect company tools and assets and report missing or damaged items.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; diesel or heavy equipment technical education preferred.
  • Five or more years of heavy equipment repair experience preferred.
  • Previous experience as a lead technician, shop foreman, or supervisor preferred.
  • Strong diagnostic knowledge of construction equipment and related systems.
  • Ability to lead employees, manage competing priorities, and communicate clearly.
  • Proficiency with computerized work orders, manufacturer diagnostic software, and basic Microsoft Office applications.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to meet company driving requirements.

Working Conditions

This position works primarily in a shop and equipment-yard environment, with exposure to noise, weather, dust, grease, and moving machinery. Duties involve standing, walking, bending, climbing, and working around heavy equipment. Occasional hands-on repairs, overtime, and schedule adjustments may be required.
