What’s the role
The Engineer – Digital & Drawing Management (SPI Administrator) role is part of Shell’s SEAM (Safety, Environment & Asset Management) organization under Technical Asset Support (TAS), which provides centralized technical expertise to support global assets remotely. The position plays a key role in maintaining the quality, accuracy, and integrity of instrumentation engineering data, supporting Shell’s asset management, reliability, and digital transformation objectives. By managing SmartPlant Instrumentation (SPI) databases and associated engineering documentation, the role helps ensure that critical asset information is accessible, standardized, and aligned with business and operational requirements.
From a technical perspective, the role combines instrumentation engineering knowledge with digital data management expertise. Responsibilities include administering and maintaining SPI databases, managing instrument specifications, loop diagrams, and wiring records, as well as ensuring data synchronization across systems such as GSAP, AVEVA AIM-A, SQL, and Digital Twin platforms. The position works closely with engineering, maintenance, and operations teams to support safe and reliable plant performance, making it well suited for candidates with a background in Instrumentation & Control Engineering, oil and gas operations, process industries, and engineering information management.
What you’ll be doing
SPI System Administration & Database Management

- Manage SPI user accounts, roles, permissions, and access controls.
- Ensure robust QA/QC processes and support a “First Time Right” quality culture.
Instrumentation Engineering Support
- Understand maintenance and operational requirements for field instruments, analyzers, PLC/DCS systems, and other control assets.
- Maintain instrument indexes, update specifications, and manage JB schedules, loop diagrams, and wiring details.
- Troubleshoot end‑to‑end instrument wiring and provide virtual technical solutions.
- Ensure accurate and updated As‑Built data in SPI.
- Coordinate with EPCs and site teams for data reviews, updates, and technical clarifications.
Project & Maintenance Support
- Review, validate, and incorporate SPI project deliverables from EPCs into the live database.
- Initiate and configure SPI databases for new capital and brownfield projects.
- Analyze technical documents, engineering data, and maintenance procedures to ensure SPI data accuracy.
- Support site teams with troubleshooting and SPI functionality training.
- Facilitate cross‑functional collaboration across Engineering, Operations, and Maintenance.
Technical & Wiring Troubleshooting Support
- Provide support for end‑to‑end loop verification, wiring diagnostics, and virtual troubleshooting for field engineers and EPCs.
