Snr Manager Design Engineering - India, Data Center Engineering

As the Senior Manager, Design Engineering - India, at Amazon Data Services India Private Limited (ADSIPL), you'll play an integral role in our engineering leadership team. A highly effective group of architects and structural, civil, mechanical, electrical and controls engineers. This team is responsible for continuously innovating on behalf of our customers whilst delivering the highest quality engineering solutions for our capacity delivery projects. You will have a direct hand in project outcomes. You'll shape design direction and improve design delivery across all India projects. You'll also set the design procedures and protocols for developing future systems.

You'll work with many parts of the AWS organisation, with external engineering partners, with permitting and regulatory bodies. You'll also engage the wider community in India on technical matters relating to data center development. That means bringing an AWS engineering view to industry bodies and forums, standards and building code committees, and policymakers.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Leading a multidisciplinary team of engineers in the design of critical data center infrastructure systems across India.
• Chairing weekly design meetings with internal engineering teams, internal customers and external consultants to resolve design issues, keep design milestones on track and escalate where needed.
• Driving process improvements across design delivery.
• Creating and tracking metrics on the cost, quality and duration of design. This includes collecting data from construction and commissioning teams as designs are implemented, so lessons learned feed back into future designs.
• Establishing capital project design budgets, contributing to complex business cases for existing and new AWS Region deployments in India, and working with AWS Finance to secure project funding.
• Working with AWS engineering leads to schedule engineering resources and influence design changes based on internal customer needs.
• Partnering with internal customers to establish project scope, schedule and deliverables.
• Engaging the wider community in India - industry bodies and forums, standards and building code committees, and government and regulatory agencies - on technical matters relating to data center development, in partnership with AWS Public Policy.
• Owning design document control, including the document controller's workflow and audits of deliverables.

• Key job responsibilities
• Leading a team of engineers/architect in the design of data center critical infrastructure systems in India • Facilitating weekly meetings with internal stakeholders, external consultants, permitting authorities and community stakeholders to address design issues, meet design milestones and escalate as needed. • Driving process improvements. • Creating and tracking metrics related to cost, quality and duration of design as well as collecting data from construction and commissioning teams as designs are implemented. • Establishing capital project design budgets and contributing to complex business cases for existing region and new region deployment in India. • Collaborating with AWS finance teams to secure funding for projects. • Working in partnership with AWS Engineering leads to schedule engineering resources and influence design changes based on internal customer needs. • Partnering with internal customers to establish project scope, schedule and deliverables. • Managing document controller’s workflow and audit of deliverables • Lead weekly staff and project readiness meetings with stakeholder teams; • Drive best practices on the team, deal with ambiguity and competing objectives, and proactively identify and mitigate risks before they become roadblocks; • Use creativity, good judgment and significant innovation in evaluating, simplify and developing project procedures including document control, tracking project metrics and inter-team information dependencies; • Identify continuous improvement strategies focused on variety of project phases including real estate due diligence, planning, design, permitting and construction; • Engage with an experienced engineering discipline leads, influencing roadmaps, priorities and process working across multiple teams including capacity delivery, site selection, utilities, due diligence, design, construction and commissioning.; • Report on status of development, quality, operations, and performance to management; • Write effective narratives and present them concisely and effectively to Directors and VPs; • Establish a mature team optimized for operational excellence, using standard project management, communication protocols and automated systems; • Have joint managerial oversight of additional employees in India including but not limited to, all Architects, Electrical, Mechanical, Colo, Structural, Controls, and Field Engineers in India;

Basic qualifications

• - Bachelor's degree or foreign equivalent in Electrical, Mechanical, Structural Engineering or equivalent field
• - 10+ years of data center design, HVAC design, or related product development experience
• - Experience leading multidisciplinary design across electrical, mechanical, civil, structural, architectural and controls disciplines on large-scale capital projects. Experience managing design budgets, schedules and delivery teams comprising internal resources supplemented with external design consultants.

Preferred qualifications

• - Experience defining data center system-level architecture, documenting performance and equipment requirements, creating and communicating conceptual designs, and creating and maintaining project documentation
• - Experience carrying new design concepts through exploration, development, and into deployment or mass production
• - Experience engaging industry bodies, standards or building code committees, regulators or government agencies on technical matters, e.g. Bureau of Indian Standards committees, including the National Building Code
