Do you want to build the data platform that shows how a cloud storage service used by millions of AWS customers is behaving? As a Software Development Engineer on Amazon Elastic Block Store (EBS), you will design, build and operate a self-service telemetry platform that processes petabytes of data every day across every AWS Region. Engineers across EBS and AWS rely on it for both operational and analytical needs, from automated production decisions and real-time monitoring to compliance reporting, customer insights and capacity forecasting. You will own large-scale distributed systems end to end, make them more efficient at scale, and help shape how engineers and AI-powered tools access data. If you are curious about distributed systems, data platforms and cloud storage, we would like to hear from you.

  • Key job responsibilities
  • - Design, build and operate distributed systems that transform, store, query and export petabyte-scale telemetry data
  • - Improve cost efficiency by evolving the platform architecture, adopting new languages and technologies, and building mechanisms that keep cost under control as usage grows
  • - Build programmatic and AI-ready interfaces that give engineers and automated tools secure, access-controlled access to data
  • - Raise operational quality through monitoring, alarming, data-quality validation and automated recovery
  • - Partner with software engineers, data engineers and product managers across EBS to turn specific use cases into reusable platform features
  • A day in the life
  • Your day might start with a short team sync, followed by focused time on the project you lead, such as designing a new storage layout or optimizing the efficiency of the transform or query engines. Along the way, you join design brainstorms and reviews, review teammates' code and get feedback on your own, and may meet with an EBS team that wants to bring new data onto the platform to help them shape the solution. You also join an on-call rotation, typically one week about every eight weeks. When you get paged, you have runbooks and your teammates to support you, and after each page we review the steps together to prevent it from happening again or automate the response.
  • About the team
  • Our team owns the telemetry and analytics platform that EBS relies on for operational and business insight, and our vision is to be the single observability platform for EBS. Our customers are EBS engineering, data engineering and product teams, along with other AWS teams that build on EBS data. Over the next few years, we are focused on making the platform more efficient, unifying how data is transformed and queried, and making data accessible to AI-powered tools. We stay on top of new technologies and actively use AI-driven development in our daily work. We invest in fault tolerance and automation so operational load stays low, which keeps our team sustainable, frees most of our time for delivering new features, and supports a healthy work-life balance. We have a mix of experience levels and tenures, and we invest in your growth through projects that expand your scope, designs with impact across EBS, and mentorship from senior engineers.

Preferred qualifications

  • - 3+ years of full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations experience
