ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Software Engineer is accountable for the following responsibilities:

Design, build, test, deploy, and maintain backend services, workflows, integrations, and APIs supporting commerce applications.

Develop services primarily using C#/.NET, Java/Spring Boot, and TypeScript/Node.js based on platform and business needs.

Apply object-oriented design and established software engineering principles to create maintainable, scalable, and testable systems.

Build services supporting order management, inventory, payments, tax, loyalty, customer identity, product data, and related commerce capabilities.

Extend and integrate modular headless commerce platforms such as Medusa, and design middleware and backend-for-frontend layers connecting storefronts, commerce engines, and downstream services.

Define clear API contracts using REST, OpenAPI, and related tools so frontend and backend teams can develop independently.

Integrate payment and tax platforms, including transaction flows for authorization, capture, refund, void, tokenization, idempotency, reconciliation, checkout, orders, and returns.

Build reliable integrations and data pipelines between commerce systems and enterprise platforms such as SAP and Salesforce Commerce Cloud.

Work with product, pricing, catalog, customer, order, and inventory data at scale while protecting data integrity.

Participate in platform and service migrations, including field mapping, validation, idempotent processing, reconciliation, cutover planning, and rollback preparation.

Design relational database schemas, develop migrations, and troubleshoot query and application performance.

Build automated unit, integration, contract, and end-to-end tests.

Deploy and operate services using containers, CI/CD pipelines, and cloud infrastructure, primarily within Microsoft Azure.

Troubleshoot production issues across application, API, database, integration, and infrastructure boundaries, and contribute to incident response and root-cause analysis.

Reduce unnecessary complexity and repetitive work by improving architecture, documentation, tooling, guardrails, and automation.

Partner with frontend engineers, product teams, business stakeholders, enterprise technology teams, and external vendors to define requirements, communicate trade-offs, and deliver integrated solutions.

AI-FIRST ENGINEERING EXPECTATIONS

Use AI agents to analyze unfamiliar codebases, legacy systems, APIs, schemas, logs, and technical documentation before implementation begins.

Use AI during design and planning to explore architecture options, identify risks, challenge assumptions, evaluate trade-offs, and develop implementation plans with dependencies, sequencing, testing, migration, acceptance criteria, and rollback considerations.

Break complex initiatives into clearly scoped tasks and use coding agents for meaningful implementation work, including multi-file changes, refactoring, API development, data mapping, automated testing, documentation, and repetitive engineering activities.

Provide AI agents with appropriate context, constraints, architecture guidance, security requirements, examples, and acceptance criteria.

Critically review, run, test, inspect, and validate AI-generated designs and code; require iteration when results do not meet engineering or production standards.

Use AI to accelerate debugging through analysis of logs, traces, production behavior, code paths, and historical implementations.

Coordinate specialized agents when appropriate for backend architecture, database design, security, API review, migration analysis, and test automation.

Improve repositories and development environments so engineers and AI agents can work effectively through clear documentation, project instructions, tests, tooling, and guardrails.

Continuously identify manual or repetitive work that can be safely delegated, automated, or supported by AI while retaining responsibility for the final outcome.

TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES (Knowledge, Skills & Abilities)

Strong knowledge of object-oriented programming, API design, data structures, concurrency, error handling, software design principles, and secure development practices.

Strong knowledge of at least one object-oriented backend ecosystem, preferably C#/.NET or Java/Spring Boot, with the ability and willingness to work across both.

Working knowledge of TypeScript/Node.js, REST, OpenAPI, middleware, integration patterns, and backend-for-frontend architecture.

Working knowledge of relational database design and development using SQL Server or PostgreSQL, including schema design, migrations, normalization, and query troubleshooting.

Working knowledge of Git, automated testing, containers, CI/CD, observability, and cloud infrastructure, preferably Microsoft Azure.

Knowledge of distributed-system reliability concepts such as retries, idempotency, reconciliation, transaction integrity, fault handling, and secure data exchange.

Practical knowledge of modern AI development tools such as GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, Cursor, ChatGPT, or similar coding agents.

Skills & Abilities

Ability to translate business and technical requirements into secure, reliable, maintainable, and scalable software solutions.

Ability to investigate ambiguous problems systematically and diagnose issues spanning applications, APIs, databases, integrations, and infrastructure.

Ability to create implementation plans, define acceptance criteria, estimate work, identify dependencies, and communicate technical risks and trade-offs.

Ability to critically evaluate AI-generated architecture and code and remain accountable for correctness, security, performance, maintainability, and design.

Ability to manage multiple priorities, collaborate across technical and nontechnical teams, and deliver results in an environment that includes modern cloud services and legacy platforms.

Ability to document systems, decisions, operating procedures, and previously undocumented technical knowledge clearly.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Bachelor’s degree in computer science, software engineering, information systems, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience required.

Minimum four years of professional software engineering experience building production applications, backend services, or enterprise integrations required.

Experience building REST APIs, services, middleware, or integration layers and working with relational databases required.

Experience developing automated tests and using Git and modern CI/CD practices required.

Demonstrated hands-on use of modern AI development tools for analysis, planning, implementation, debugging, testing, documentation, or refactoring required.

Experience with eCommerce, order management, payments, inventory, SAP integrations, Salesforce Commerce Cloud, headless commerce, Azure, Docker, or Kubernetes preferred.

Experience migrating functionality from legacy or monolithic platforms and building reliable high-volume integrations
