Role Overview

ID.me is seeking a Software Engineer II to join the Developer Portal team, where we're building the self-service platform that enables organizations to rapidly integrate ID.me.

Identity proofing is fundamentally complex. Integrating an identity proofing flow requires many steps while meeting standards-body assurance requirements. The Developer Portal is the product that brings those pieces together for the external developer.

Today, much of that onboarding is still performed manually by in-house Solutions Consultants who have many other responsibilities. Our mission is to enable customers and their developers to register their application, configure their identity needs, test in a production-like sandbox, and launch to production, all through a modern self-service experience.

This is an early-career role for engineers who are 0 to 2 years into their career and write excellent code. You don't need years of industry experience. You need strong fundamentals, a track record of building real things, and an AI-native way of working: you already use AI coding tools as a core part of how you design, build, test, and debug, and you have the judgment to know when their output is right and when it isn't.

This is a backend-leaning full-stack role . You'll work on the services, APIs, and data models behind the portal (application registration, authorization, and the developer-facing APIs our customers integrate against), and you'll ship the user-facing surfaces those services power in our Next.js and React frontend. You'll start with well-scoped features alongside senior engineers and grow quickly into owning features end-to-end, from API contract to production.

Our backend services are primarily Java (Spring Boot) alongside legacy Ruby services. The frontend is a micro-frontend platform built with Next.js , React , and TypeScript . You don't need to know all of these on day one. If your fundamentals are strong, we're confident you'll pick up whatever the problem requires.

What You'll Do

Build and Ship Developer Features

Design, implement, test, and deploy Developer Portal capabilities across the stack: backend APIs, database changes, and the frontend experiences customers use. Start with well-defined features and bugs, then take on progressively larger and more ambiguous work as you grow.

Write High-Quality, Well-Tested Code

Write clean, readable, maintainable code with strong test coverage. Participate actively in code review, both getting feedback and giving thoughtful feedback to teammates, including senior engineers.

Build AI-First

Use AI-assisted development tools (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor) every day to move faster on implementation, testing, debugging, and understanding unfamiliar code. Help the team find better ways to use these tools, and hold AI-generated code to the same bar as code you wrote by hand.

Learn the Identity Stack

Build hands-on depth in authentication and authorization, including OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, enterprise SSO, multi-tenant access control, and credential management, working with our Wallet, Organizations, and Platform Engineering teams.

Operate What You Ship

Help keep the systems our team owns healthy in production: monitoring, alerting, debugging live issues, and participating in on-call once you're ramped up.

Collaborate and Grow

Work closely with Product, Design, and engineers across teams. Learn to break down problems, write short technical designs, and communicate clearly about tradeoffs and progress. You'll have a dedicated mentor and a clear path toward end-to-end feature ownership.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

0 to 2 years of professional software engineering experience.

Excellent coding skills and strong computer science fundamentals: data structures, algorithms, complexity, and debugging.

Fluency in at least one modern programming language (e.g., Java, TypeScript/JavaScript, Python, Go, Kotlin, C#, Ruby).

Evidence that you build real software: internships, substantial class or team projects, open-source contributions, hackathons, or side projects that other people use.

AI-native development workflow : daily, hands-on use of AI coding tools (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot) to build and ship software, paired with the ability to critically evaluate AI-generated code for correctness, security, performance, and maintainability, and to explain every line you submit.

Experience building with LLMs or agentic workflows (e.g., using the Claude or OpenAI APIs, MCP, or agent frameworks) in projects or coursework.

Understanding of how web applications work, including HTTP, REST APIs, and relational databases/SQL.

Ability to learn unfamiliar systems quickly through independent research and by working with mentors and subject-matter experts.

Clear written and verbal communication. You can explain what you built, why, and what tradeoffs you made.

Preferred Qualifications

Internship experience building backend services or full-stack web applications.

Experience with Java and Spring Boot, or another backend framework (Rails, Node.js/Express, Django, Go).

Experience with React, TypeScript, or Next.js.

Experience with PostgreSQL or another relational database, including schema design.

Exposure to authentication and authorization concepts such as OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, JWTs, SSO, or access control models.

Experience building developer tools, APIs, SDKs, or documentation that other developers use.

Experience writing automated tests (unit, integration, or end-to-end with tools like Jest, JUnit, or Playwright).

Familiarity with cloud platforms (GCP, AWS, Azure), containers, or CI/CD pipelines.

Interest in security, identity, fraud prevention, or regulated systems.

What Success Looks Like

First 30 days: Your dev environment is set up, you've shipped your first production change, and you understand how the Developer Portal fits into ID.me's identity platform.

First 90 days: You're independently delivering well-scoped features across backend and frontend,
