As a team member in Finance at Nationwide, a Fortune 100 company with nearly $70 billion in annual sales, the opportunities are endless! Let Nationwide help create your career journey! At Nationwide®, “on your side” goes beyond just words. Our customers are at the center of everything we do and we’re looking for associates who are passionate about delivering extraordinary care.

Lead the future of P&C capital performance at Nationwide

Nationwide is seeking a Senior Actuary to join the Capital Forecasting team within Enterprise Risk Management. This is a new opportunity for a P&C actuarial leader to help update the framework that will guide how our Property & Casualty business sets, monitors, and improves target returns and target combined ratios.

You will apply actuarial judgment and technical expertise to connect underwriting performance, pricing and reserving insights, and capital metrics to enterprise business decisions. Working across Finance, P&C Actuarial, Risk Management, Capital Modeling, and business leaders, you will turn complex actuarial analysis into clear targets, actionable recommendations, and a consistent capital monitoring and reporting framework.

What you’ll do

  • Serve as a senior P&C actuarial subject-matter expert for target returns, target combined ratios, and capital analytics.
  • Help enhance and strengthen the P&C capital monitoring and reporting framework to better support capital deployment decisions.
  • Partner with business units, Finance, and actuarial leaders to determine appropriate targets at a granular cell-planning unit level and evaluate performance against those targets.
  • Review target assumptions, actuarial methodologies, and business performance; recommend changes when needed.
  • Analyze loss-ratio history, reserving triangles, pricing and reserving indications, premium trending and on-leveling, assumptions, coefficients, correlation matrices, and related P&C data.
  • Work with modeling partners to understand capital outputs, assess the reasonableness of results, and apply actuarial judgment to identify limitations or emerging issues.
  • Document assumptions, methods, data sources, and considerations clearly and present cohesive recommendations to technical and non-technical audiences, including senior Finance, Actuarial, Risk, and business leaders.

What we’re looking for

  • Typically eight or more years of P&C actuarial experience or closely related experience in insurance financial risk, capital management, underwriting performance, or corporate actuarial work.
  • Strong understanding of P&C actuarial methods and the insurance business, including pricing, reserving, loss-ratio analysis, profitability, target returns, and combined ratios.
  • The ability to evaluate complex quantitative analysis, assumptions, and model outputs and communicate the “why” behind targets and recommendations.
  • Demonstrated success influencing partners across Finance, Actuarial, Risk Management, modeling, and business functions.
  • Strong strategic judgment, executive communication, presentation, and storytelling skills, with the ability to make technical concepts actionable for non-technical audiences.
  • Comfort creating structure and delivering results when the starting process is incomplete, disconnected, or needs to be rebuilt.
  • An actuarial designation such as FCAS, or progress toward a comparable actuarial designation, is preferred. Equivalent P&C actuarial and financial-risk experience will also be considered.
  • Experience with capital forecasting, stochastic modeling, predictive analytics, enterprise risk, M&A, or related capital and portfolio analytics is valued.

Why this opportunity

This role offers the chance to build something new and highly visible: an updated P&C capital performance framework that will help Nationwide better understand its business, align target returns with risk, and make stronger capital deployment decisions. You will have broad exposure across Finance, Actuarial, Risk Management, and business leadership, with the opportunity to see your actuarial framework move from strategy to execution.

If you are a P&C actuary who enjoys applying technical expertise to enterprise decisions, building trusted partnerships, and creating practical frameworks that improve business performance, we invite you to learn more.

This role can be staffed fully remote.
