The role will work closely with the U.S. Corporate Tax team on various Canada tax compliance and reporting activities, while also supporting global indirect tax matters including GST, withholding tax and exemption certificates. The candidate should ensure timely compliance, manage reporting obligations, and closely work with cross-functional teams on tax matters.
Canada Tax & Cross-Border Coordination
1. Support general Canada tax matters - including indirect tax, corporate tax compliance and reporting, and other Canada tax obligations - not limited to indirect tax alone.
2. Work closely with the U.S. Corporate Tax team on various Canada tax compliance and reporting activities, including current and deferred tax packages and return-to-provision analysis.
3. Assist in Canada entities' corporate tax filing packages, including preparation of current and deferred tax packages and return-to-provision compliance.
4. Monitor changes in Canada tax laws (and other assigned regions) and assess their impact on business operations.
A. Compliance & Reporting:
1. Manage end-to-end transactional tax compliance for jurisdictions across Canada and other assigned regions (including GST, HST, PST, QST etc.); majority of the role's time will be spent on transactional tax compliance.
2. Ensure accurate and timely filing of transactional and corporate tax returns in accordance with local regulations.
3. Prepare and review monthly/quarterly/annual reconciliations of transactional tax accounts.
4. Manage exemption certification and relevant digital compliance requirements in other regions.
B. Advisory & Business Support:
1. Provide direct and indirect tax advice to business teams on transactions, contracts, and supply chain flows.
2. Collaborate with internal departments (e.g., finance, legal, logistics, procurement) to address tax issues and optimize structures.
3. Support tax planning initiatives and evaluate cross-border transactions for withholding tax/GST efficiency.
C. Audit & Risk Management:
1. Lead or assist with tax audits, assessments, and queries from authorities.
2. Coordinate with external consultants, legal advisors, and government bodies as needed.
3. Maintain robust documentation and tax registers for audit deadlines and internal controls.
D. System & Process Improvement:
1. Work closely with IT and ERP teams (e.g., SAP, Oracle, Blackline) to ensure correct indirect and withholding tax configurations.
2. Contribute to automation and process improvement initiatives in transactional tax compliance and reporting.
3. Ensure compliance with global tax policies and internal control frameworks (e.g., SOX, SAF-T).
4. Prior involvement in direct and indirect tax automation or transformation projects is a plus.
E. Qualifications
1. Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Tax, or a related field.
2. India CA and CMA professional qualification is a must.
3. Around 5 plus years of working experience in tax practice at an international CPA/tax firm or a multinational company, with the majority of exposure in transactional tax compliance.
4. Prior experience or exposure to Canada tax matters is preferred but not mandatory - relevant training will be provided.
5. Strong working knowledge of transactional tax matters (GST/Withholding tax); exposure to corporate tax compliance and Canada tax regimes would be an added advantage.
F. Key Skills
1. Solid tax foundation with strong understanding of Indian/global transactional (withholding and indirect) tax laws, and a reasonable understanding of corporate and withholding tax frameworks.
2. Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work closely with the U.S. Corporate Tax team and other cross-functional, global teams.
3. Quick learner with the ability to take ownership of work and adapt to new tax regimes (including Canada tax) with minimal supervision.
4. Hands-on experience with ERP systems (SAP, Oracle, Blackline) and digital tax compliance tools (e.g., ONESOURCE) preferred.
5. Good problem-solving skills and proven ability to manage conflicts as a team player.
6. Ability to handle multiple jurisdictions and manage deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
