At Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska, we are a mission-driven organization dedicated to championing the health and well-being of our members and the communities we serve.

Our team is the power behind that promise. And, as the industry rapidly evolves and we seek ways to optimize business processes and customer experiences, there’s no greater time for forward-thinking professionals like you to join us in delivering on it! As a member of Team Blue, you’ll find purpose, opportunities and the support you need to build a meaningful career and make a powerful impact in our community.

Platform Engineering at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska is shaping how technology is delivered. We create trusted platforms, reusable patterns, and self-service experiences that remove friction, make the secure path the easy path, and help teams turn ideas into solutions for our members, providers, employees, and communities.

As our Senior Platform Engineer for Databricks, you'll own the platform that powers data engineering, analytics, and AI across the enterprise and make it more reliable, secure, and cost-effective as adoption grows. You'll join a small, growing team that also owns GitHub Enterprise and Azure API Management. Databricks is where you'll start. Over time, you'll have the opportunity to back up another team platform and help shape what we build next.

The ideal candidate will live within driving distance of the Omaha, Nebraska office. This position allows remote flexibility but will have 1 day per week in the office.

***Omaha is the preferred location and will get first consideration***

If living in one of our approved states (Florida, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, and Texas) – this person may travel to our headquarters based on business needs.

What you'll do:

  • Own the platform: Lead the technical direction, health, reliability, and lifecycle of the enterprise Databricks platform, including workspace configuration, compute, jobs, and SQL warehouses.
  • Set the guardrails: Define and enforce standards for identity, access, networking, Unity Catalog, and sensitive-data controls, with clear ownership boundaries between platform and workload teams.
  • Automate and enable self-service: Build Terraform-based Infrastructure-as-Code and automation using GitHub, the Databricks CLI, REST APIs, Python, or PowerShell, and publish golden paths for data, analytics, and AI workloads.
  • Advance responsible AI: Apply AI-assisted engineering to platform support and enable governed adoption of Databricks AI capabilities such as Genie, agents, and model serving.
  • Lead modernization: Drive upgrades, migrations, integrations, and security remediations, and prioritize enhancements based on risk, customer feedback, and adoption.
  • Run it well and cost-effectively: Own monitoring, incident response, and root-cause analysis, and optimize utilization through compute policies, budgets, tagging, and chargeback or showback.
  • Partner and mentor: Work with security, architecture, compliance, and data teams, mentor engineers, and serve as the backup for one other Platform Engineering platform.

To be considered for this position, you must have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, Data Engineering, Information Systems, or a related technical field; an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Seven (7) years of experience in information technology, data engineering, cloud operations, platform engineering, DevOps, infrastructure support, or a related technical field.
  • Hands-on production experience administering, securing, and troubleshooting an enterprise cloud data platform such as Databricks, Snowflake, Microsoft Fabric, or a comparable platform, including workspace or account configuration, compute, jobs, SQL warehouses, permissions, and usage policies.
  • Experience delivering reusable data platform capabilities, guardrails, or deployment patterns adopted by multiple teams.
  • Experience building Infrastructure-as-Code with Terraform or comparable tools and automating with Python, PowerShell, platform CLIs, or REST APIs.
  • Advanced knowledge of cloud identity, networking, storage, security, and monitoring as they relate to enterprise data platforms, preferably in Microsoft Azure.

The strongest candidates for this position will also possess:

  • Direct production experience with Databricks, or a demonstrated ability to quickly transfer comparable data platform experience to Databricks.
  • Experience operating enterprise data platforms in regulated or security-conscious environments such as healthcare or financial services.
  • Data platform or cloud certifications (such as Databricks, Snowflake, or Microsoft Azure) in platform administration, data engineering, security, or architecture.
  • Experience leading data platform migrations, data governance or catalog adoption (such as Unity Catalog), disaster recovery planning, or other major modernization efforts.
  • Experience with GitHub Enterprise or Azure API Management, or a track record of quickly ramping up on new platforms.
  • A track record of mentoring engineers, influencing technical strategy, and delivering measurable platform outcomes.

*** We are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment visa at this time.***
