At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We’re working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!
This role is part of Blue National Security (BNS), where our focus is the design, development, and delivery of launch and spacecraft systems for national security missions. Through Blue Ring, our all-in-one, high-powered hybrid solar-electric and chemical-propelled spacecraft, we provide unmatched mission maneuverability, versatility, and capacity at dramatically lower-profile costs.
About This Role
At Blue Origin, we believe in a future where millions of people live and work in space. Blue Ring (our multi-mission in-space vehicle) is a cornerstone of that future, and the electrical power system that sustains it must perform flawlessly across a wide range of missions and environments.
As a Senior Power Electronics Engineer, you will architect, design, and deliver the electrical power components that keep Blue Ring (and similar systems) alive in space. You'll work without oversight, lead other engineers, own your program scope, and shape the tools, processes, and standards that define how our team works. This is a role with real impact, your decisions directly influence whether we achieve our mission objectives.
If you don't meet every qualification listed, we encourage you to apply. We know exceptional engineers come from many different backgrounds, and we value the perspective and experience you bring.
What You'll Do
Power Systems Architecture & Circuit Design
· Architect, design, and deliver end-to-end electrical power systems for Core Systems and Components, Space Mobility avionics, including power generation, energy storage, power distribution, regulation, and fault protection
· Define and own the EPS bus architecture including primary bus topology, voltage domain selection, fault isolation strategy, and power sequencing across vehicle modes and mission phases
· Design power electronics circuits including solar array regulators, battery charge/discharge controllers, DC/DC converters, LDOs, hot-swap controllers, and pyrotechnic firing circuits for flight applications
· Develop power budgets across mission phases and drive power allocation trades with systems engineering and subsystem owners
· Decompose and allocate system-level EPS requirements into subcircuit and module-level requirements across interconnected, integrated electronic assemblies
· Lead design for derating, WCCA, tolerance analysis, and thermal analysis across your EPS hardware scope
· Define grounding, bonding, and shielding architecture to meet EMI/EMC requirements at the system level
· Guide PCB physical design including power plane strategy, high-current routing, thermal management, and DfX requirements for flight hardware
Requirements, Architecture & Documentation
· Lead requirements analysis and architecture definition for EPS subsystems, ensuring complete traceability from vehicle-level requirements through circuit-level implementation
· Author and own hardware requirements documents, interface control documents (ICDs), design specifications, and architecture trade study documentation
· Independently determine methods and procedures for new EPS design assignments and establish them as standards for the team
· Prepare and chair technical design reviews (SRR, PDR, CDR) for EPS hardware, including driving closure of all findings and action items
Verification, Test & Anomaly Resolution
· Lead the development of hardware verification and validation plans with full requirements traceability for your EPS scope
· Own environmental qualification and acceptance test strategies for power system hardware
· Lead anomaly investigations and root cause analyses for complex EPS failures, and own the development and implementation of recovery plans
· Apply advanced technical judgment to evaluate and disposition test anomalies, driving the corrective action process through design resolution
Program Leadership & Ownership
· Own schedule, budget, and technical milestones for your EPS hardware scope; hold program-level technical approval authority for your deliverables
· Lead projects and significant tool development initiatives; own process improvements that increase design efficiency and reduce errors across the EPS discipline
· Provide significant support to strategic initiatives including technology roadmapping, EPS architecture maturation, and documentation of best practices at the business and functional level
Team Leadership & Mentorship
· Lead, mentor, and train engineers at multiple levels on EPS design, analysis techniques, verification methods, and hardware release criteria
· Review the technical work of others with the ability to detect subtle design flaws and provide actionable, substantive improvements
· Develop processes and standards that improve the efficiency and quality of EPS design and verification across the team
· Build strong working relationships with systems engineering, mechanical, thermal, software, and test teams to resolve cross-discipline technical challenges
Qualifications (What You Bring)
· B.S. in Electrical Engineering or a closely related field
· 8+ years of experience designing and delivering electrical power systems hardware through the full development lifecycle — from requirements and architecture through fabrication, qualification, and production
· Experience architecting and designing spacecraft or high-reliability EPS hardware including power generation interfaces, energy storage systems, power distribution units (PDUs), and regulation circuits
· Deep understanding of power electronics design including DC/DC converters (buck, boost, buck-boost, flyback), battery management, and fault protection circuits
· Experience performing and leading derating analysis, WCCA, tolerance analysis, and thermal analysis for flight or high-reliability power hardware
· Experience defining and implementing grounding, bonding, and shielding architecture for complex electronic systems
· Experience leading technical design reviews (PDR, CDR) and owning the documentation and action item closure process
· Experience leading root cause analyses and anomaly investigations for complex hardware failures, including development and execution of recovery plans
· Demonstrated ability to mentor and provide substantive technical feedback to other engineers
· U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status (required for access to export-controlled technical data)
Preferred Qualifications (What Sets You Apart)
· M.S. or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering or a related field
· Experience designing EPS hardware for spacecraft, in-space propulsion systems, or launch vehicle avionics
· Experience with solar array power system design including maximum power point tracking (MPPT) and array-to-bus regulation architectures
· Knowledge of battery electrochemistry, cell-level characterization, and battery management system (BMS) design for Li-ion or Li-polymer flight batteries
· Familiarity with fault protection architecture design including autonomous fault detection, isolation, and recovery (FDIR) strategies for in-space systems
· Experience designing pyrotechnic or electro-explosive device (EED) firing circuits for spacecraft separation or deployment systems
· Knowledge of radiation effects on power electronics and experience selecting or qualifying radiation-tolerant components
· Experience with power system modeling and simulation using tools such as MATLAB/Simulink, SPICE-based tools, or Systems Tool Kit (STK)
· Familiarity with MIL-STD-975, MIL-PRF-38535, ECSS, or equivalent hi-rel parts qualification and screeni
