The Amazon Web Services (AWS)AFX team is looking for a Software Development Engineer (SDE III) with a passion for technology, an obsession with bar-raising customer experiences, and a drive to build something new that operates at worldwide scale. In this role, you'll implement modern, creative, and innovative data experiences across a breadth of customer-facing web apps, our data warehouse for reporting, and integrations with third-party applications.

This is a high-visibility role across AWS internally and the global community of AWS developers and users. If you're passionate about building state-of-the-art web applications and services centered on simplicity, innovation, and performance — and want to apply generative AI and agentic systems to real customer problems — we'd like to hear from you.

  • Key job responsibilities
  • Build Gen AI & agentic experiences — design and ship features powered by large language models, retrieval, and autonomous/agentic workflows that operate reliably at scale.
  • Partner closely with design and product teams to understand needs, propose features, create early prototypes, and transform them into compelling experiences.
  • Integrate information from a large number of services into cohesive, performant systems.
  • Write clean, maintainable code and perform thorough, kind peer code reviews.
  • Deep-dive into client and server systems to optimize for performance, maintainability, and extensibility.
  • Propose innovative tools, frameworks, automations, and processes adopted across the services team.
  • Mentor team members and promote engineering excellence.
  • Tackle ambiguous problems, rapidly produce prototypes, and outline clear paths from prototype to production.

Basic qualifications

  • - 5+ years of non-internship professional software development experience

  • - 5+ years of leading design or architecture (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
  • - Experience as a mentor, tech lead or leading an engineering team

Preferred qualifications

  • - 5+ years of full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations experience
