About Us

Epia Neuro is a neural technology company developing intent-driven systems designed to restore function and independence for people living with neurological conditions. Its platform integrates implantable neural interfaces, adaptive algorithms, and assistive devices to translate neural intent into real-world action. The company’s initial focus is stroke-related motor impairment, with expansion in cognitive decline and other neurological disorders, focusing on long-term solutions for the growing aging population.

The Role

We’re looking for a Staff Electrical Systems Engineer to help take Epia’s neurotechnology from a functional research prototype into a robust, reliable, and manufacturable Class III medical device.

This is a hands-on technical leadership role at the intersection of hardware, firmware, and system integration. You’ll own significant electrical design decisions as we evolve our existing architecture, solve reliability and manufacturability challenges, and move the system through development, verification, and production.

You’ll report to the Director of Hardware Engineering and work closely across engineering and manufacturing to turn what we’ve proven in research into a product built for real-world use.

Location

This role is based out of the San Francisco Bay Area and expected to work onsite from our Alameda headquarters five days a week.

What You’ll Do

Electrical Systems & Hardware

Own and evolve the electrical architecture across implantable and external systems.

Design and develop PCBAs, including schematic capture, component selection, layout guidance, and board bring-up.

Develop analog, digital, and mixed-signal circuits, including MCU-based systems and communication interfaces.

Drive design trade-offs across performance, power, reliability, manufacturability, and regulatory requirements.

Translate product requirements into electrical systems specifications across power, communications, safety, and reliability.

System Integration & Validation

Develop embedded C/C++ for hardware bring-up, integration, and debugging, and use Python for test and analysis.

Debug complex hardware/firmware interactions across subsystems.

Define board- and system-level verification strategies, test plans, and automated validation approaches.

Prototype → Product

Drive the transition from research hardware into reliable, manufacturable product hardware.

Identify where existing designs need to be redesigned, hardened, or simplified as we move into product development.

Lead design-for-manufacturability and reliability improvements as we move toward production-intent designs and builds.

Ensure design decisions, verification, and documentation meet the rigor required of a Class III medical device.

Technical Leadership

Own significant technical decisions within your scope and clearly communicate trade-offs across engineering and leadership.

Partner closely with mechanical, firmware, software, test, quality, and manufacturing teams.

Maintain critical design documentation, including schematics, BOMs, test plans, verification results, and design history file inputs.

Qualifications

8+ years of hands-on electrical hardware development, or 6+ years with a Master’s/PhD, with a degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field.

Experience owning electrical architecture for a complex product through verification and production handoff.

Strong analog, digital, and mixed-signal circuit design, including MCU-based systems, power architecture, and communication interfaces.

Hands-on PCBA development, including schematic capture, component selection, layout collaboration, and signal/power integrity.

Embedded C/C++ experience for hardware bring-up, integration, and debugging; Python for test automation and analysis.

Strong hardware/firmware debugging skills using standard lab equipment.

Experience working within a regulated design process, including requirements traceability, design verification, and risk analysis.

Ability to drive technical decisions across disciplines and communicate trade-offs clearly.

Nice To Have

Class II/III medical device experience, ideally with active implantables.

Familiarity with IEC 60601-1, ISO 14708, ISO 14971, and IEC 62304.

Ultra-low-power or wirelessly powered systems experience, including inductive power or low-power radios such as BLE.

Experience with biopotential/neural signal acquisition, low-noise analog design, or stimulation circuitry.

Experience scaling hardware from research prototypes to contract manufacturer builds.

Experience building automated test and validation systems.

Physical Requirements

Ability to work in lab environments, including bench testing and hardware debugging

Occasional lifting of lab equipment and hardware prototypes
