About the Role
We are seeking a Staff Environmental Scientist I to support environmental field activities associated with a three-year environmental remediation contract based primarily in southeast Missouri, with a strong preference for candidates within reasonable driving distance of project sites in Jefferson, Washington, St. Francois, and Madison Counties.
The Staff Environmental Scientist I will work as a Field Technician and will spend most workdays in the field providing technical oversight of remedial activities performed by EPA and non-EPA contractors.
The successful candidate will be able to work independently in the field while also collaborating effectively with multiple field staff and contractors from other organizations. During periods of reduced field activity, particularly during the winter months, the position may provide support on other environmental projects, including related field work performed under other contracts.
This is a hybrid remote role based primarily in southeast Missouri that requires an estimated travel of up to 30% annually outside the southeast Missouri area (within the U.S.), to support alternate projects, depending on project requirements.
Responsibilities
- Observe and document field activities of environmental cleanup contractors.
- Conduct site inspections and sampling.
- Participate in contractor meetings.
- Prepare technical documentation.
- Communicate field conditions and findings to project managers and the EPA Task Order Contracting Officer's Representative (TOCOR).
- Evaluation of contractor performance in accordance with approved plans.
- Coordination and interaction with homeowners and public in support of government client.
- Collect soil, groundwater, surface-water, and sediment samples.
- Travel to potentially contaminated sites throughout southeast Missouri.
- Travel to other sites within US to support environmental investigations or cleanup efforts.
Requirements
Required Qualifications and Experience
- Entry-level or junior-level experience in environmental field work, environmental science, remediation, sampling, construction oversight, or related discipline.
- Ability to work independently in the field and effectively collaborate with project teams, contractors, and other field personnel.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate, thorough field notes and technical documentation.
- Ability to prepare clear, concise written reports and communicate field observations effectively to project managers and other technical personnel.
- Ability to travel locally throughout southeast Missouri for outdoor work in the field for extended periods.
- Ability to work safely on active remediation and environmental project sites and comply with applicable health and safety requirements.
- Valid driver's license, safe driving record, and reliable transportation for travel to project sites.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for employer sponsorship, now or at any time in the future.
- Must be able to obtain clearance to access military bases and other federal government installations to perform job duties if required.
Preferred Qualifications and Experience
- Experience overseeing or supporting shallow excavation activities.
- Experience collecting shallow soil samples and managing lead-contaminated soil.
- Experience preparing and shipping environmental samples to an EPA Regional Laboratory.
- Experience drying and sieving soil for XRF analysis.
- Experience operating an XRF for soil screening.
- Experience collecting water samples from hydrants, spigots, water wells, and residential water supply lines.
- Familiarity with the EPA Residential Lead Handbook and requirements associated with lead-contaminated residential properties.
- Experience working on privately owned residential or commercial properties.
- Experience interacting professionally with property owners, residents, contractors, or members of the public.
- Experience appropriately handling sensitive or confidential project information.
- Experience working on EPA, Superfund, CERCLA remedial sites or similar environmental projects.
Education and Training
- Bachelor's degree in environmental science, geology, biology, chemistry, engineering, or a related scientific or environmental field; associate degree or combination of education and experience equivalent to an associate's degree (approximately 4 years) will also be considered.
- OSHA health and safety training (40-hour HAZWOPER certification) preferred.
Physical Requirements
- Must be able and willing to commute daily (70% of the time) to project sites in Jefferson, Washington, St. Francois, and Madison Counties in SEMO, and travel to visit job sites outside of the southeast Missouri area (within the United States), typically up to 30% annually.
- Physically able, with or without accommodation, to work in outdoor environments with uneven terrain and variable outdoor conditions including heat, cold, dust, noise, chemicals, moisture, dryness, and vibration.
- This position requires the ability to perform physical activities associated with field work, including walking long distances, climbing ladders, and carrying equipment. Bending, kneeling, stooping, and reaching are essential functions of the job.
- Position requires frequent performance of repetitive bending and stooping, standing and walking, power gripping and squeezing (using hand tools, levers, etc.), operation of vehicles, and lifting less than 25–50 pounds. Often performing work with arms above shoulder level and keyboard/mouse operations. Occasionally performing repetitive fine hand movements and lifting 50–75 pounds. Rarely climbing stairs, using portable ladders, working around heavy moving equipment, and working in confined spaces.
- Position will require wearing associated personal protective equipment (PPE), including but not limited to safety glasses/goggles, gloves, safety shoes/boots, hard hats/safety helmets, hearing protection, and respirators.
- Good near and far vision (corrected to 20/40) is necessary to accurately measure instruments, record data in field logs, and identify potential hazards in the field.
- Must be able to work in a hybrid remote work arrangement with prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
