Job Scope

The Staff Product Engineer, Tray & Packaging develops, designs, and tests sterile and non-sterile packaging solutions that protect Acumed products during transport, storage, and surgery. This includes customized surgical tray systems supporting product reprocessing/re-sterilization and sterile packaging that maintains sterile barriers throughout the product lifecycle.

This role leads technical activities from research and concept development through specifications, testing, validation, and implementation, while supporting existing packaging solutions and continuous improvement efforts.

Duties/Responsibilities

• •Leads engineering scope and deliverables for large or complex projects.
• •Provides technical leadership, resolves recurring issues, and establishes design and testing standards.
• •Mentors engineers and staff across projects and technical specialty areas.
• •Manages external vendors and partners with Manufacturing on new technologies and processes.
• •Works with hospital staff, consultants, and field representatives to understand unmet needs and develop solutions.
• •Communicates with and influences internal and external stakeholders, including executives and sales partners.
• •Develops complex test methods and approves test protocols/reports and Engineering Change Requests (ECRs), when delegated.
• •Standardizes testing/design processes and develops internal testing capabilities and equipment.
• •Participates in technical review boards and industry standards activities.
• •Serves as Packaging Engineering liaison to Business Units and supports department KPIs.

Qualifications

• •Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Bio-Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent with 8 years of experience preferred; or 14 years of medical device development experience.
• •Experience leading complex projects and mentoring engineers/interns.
• •Highly proficient in medical device packaging design and sterile packaging testing.
• •Highly proficient in testing methods for reprocessing reusable medical devices.
• •Proficient in medical device packaging manufacturing processes and technical writing.
• •Advanced knowledge of Operating Room and Central Sterile management techniques and products.
• •Ability to independently develop technical solutions and intellectual property.
• •Strong communication skills with cross-functional teams, HCPs, executives, and senior management.
• •Ability to develop HCP relationships and independently review multiple projects.
• •Ability to write technical product papers and provide budget input as needed.
