As a Staff Software Engineer, you’ll provide technical leadership, influence engineering strategy across teams and help build resilient, scalable platforms that power Australia’s largest bank.
You’ll have the opportunity to solve complex engineering challenges, mentor other engineers and help raise engineering standards while shaping the future of our Payments technology.

You’ll join the API Customer Experience Squad within the Domestic Payments Crew.
The squad is building end-to-end capabilities that enable customers to self-onboard to CommBank’s Payment API products and services. Our goal is to create a first-class experience where customers can discover services, test integrations and complete onboarding independently, supported by an AI companion.
You’ll work alongside engineers, Product, Architecture, Security and Operations to build secure and reliable customer experiences at scale.
What you’ll do
As a Staff Software Engineer, you’ll:
- Provide technical leadership across teams, influencing engineering direction, architecture and technical standards.
- Design, build and evolve secure, scalable and resilient software platforms and distributed systems.
- Lead architecture and design decisions and help modernise our platforms using cloud-native and event-driven approaches.
- Champion engineering excellence across software quality, testing, observability, security, resilience and operational excellence.
- Foster a strong DevSecOps culture by taking ownership of solutions from design and development through to deployment, production operations and continuous improvement.
- Mentor engineers, grow technical capability and support the adoption of modern and AI-enabled engineering practices.
We’re interested in hearing from people who
You’re an experienced software engineer who enjoys solving complex technical problems, influencing engineering direction and helping teams deliver great technology.
You’ll bring deep expertise across several areas of modern software engineering, together with curiosity and the ability to learn and adapt. Experience across every technology in our environment isn’t required.
We’re particularly interested in experience across:
- Modern software engineering using backend technologies such as Java and Spring Boot, Node.js and TypeScript.
- Building APIs, microservices and secure, high-performance distributed applications.
- Cloud-native engineering using AWS, Kubernetes, containerisation and Infrastructure as Code.
- Event-driven architecture and messaging technologies such as Kafka.
- CI/CD, DevSecOps, observability, resilience and owning software throughout its production lifecycle.
- Providing technical leadership, making architectural decisions, mentoring engineers and influencing engineering standards across teams.
