Description
The Opportunity
RETTEW is seeking an experienced Stormwater Management Engineer to bring specialized stormwater expertise to our growing Land Development practice.
If you enjoy solving complex drainage challenges, developing stormwater management strategies, navigating permitting requirements, and figuring out how to make technically sound solutions work on real sites, this role offers the opportunity to make stormwater a meaningful part of your career—not simply one task within a broader civil design position.
You'll support projects ranging from redevelopment sites to complex, multiphase developments exceeding 100 acres, working alongside engineers, Project Managers, designers, surveyors, and environmental professionals.
Your work will directly influence how projects manage water, meet regulatory requirements, protect surrounding infrastructure and resources, and move successfully from concept through permitting and construction.
What You'll Do
As a Stormwater Management Engineer, you will:
- Develop stormwater management and drainage solutions for commercial, industrial, residential, mixed-use, institutional, municipal, and redevelopment projects.
- Perform hydrologic and hydraulic analyses, drainage-area delineation, stormwater modeling, routing calculations, and related engineering analyses.
- Design stormwater management facilities, conveyance systems, drainage infrastructure, and post-construction stormwater management solutions.
- Support site grading, erosion and sediment control, utility coordination, and other civil-site design elements associated with stormwater performance.
- Prepare stormwater management reports, calculations, plans, specifications, permit applications, and supporting technical documentation.
- Support Pennsylvania NPDES, PCSM, erosion and sediment control, and related stormwater permitting activities.
- Evaluate existing drainage conditions and develop practical solutions that balance regulatory requirements, site constraints, constructability, cost, and client objectives.
- Coordinate with Project Managers, engineers, designers, surveyors, environmental professionals, clients, municipalities, conservation districts, and regulatory agencies.
- Respond to technical review comments and support projects through permitting and agency approval.
- Review calculations, drawings, reports, and other technical deliverables to support quality and consistency.
- Participate in project and client meetings and communicate stormwater concepts clearly to both technical and nontechnical stakeholders.
- Share stormwater knowledge with other team members and contribute to the continued development of RETTEW's technical capabilities.
What We're Looking For
Required
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related engineering discipline from an accredited program.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license in Pennsylvania or another state with eligibility for Pennsylvania reciprocity.
- Professional engineering experience with a meaningful focus on stormwater management, drainage, water resources, and/or land development.
- Hands-on experience performing hydrologic and hydraulic calculations and stormwater analyses.
- Experience developing stormwater management or drainage designs for civil/site-development projects.
- Working knowledge of grading, erosion and sediment control, utilities, permitting, and land development plans.
- Experience preparing engineering calculations, reports, plans, and permit-support documentation.
- Experience with stormwater modeling or water-resources engineering software.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to collaborate across multidisciplinary project teams.
- Valid driver's license and ability to travel to project, client, or agency locations as needed.
Preferred
- Experience with Pennsylvania stormwater management requirements.
- Experience with NPDES permitting, PCSM design, and Pennsylvania erosion and sediment control requirements.
- Experience using HydroCAD, StormCAD, Hydraflow, HEC-HMS, HEC-RAS, or comparable stormwater/water-resources modeling tools.
- Experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D or comparable civil engineering design software.
- Experience coordinating with municipalities, conservation districts, or regulatory agencies.
- Experience supporting complex or large-scale land development projects.
- Experience reviewing stormwater calculations/designs or providing technical guidance to other engineers and designers.
Build Stormwater Expertise
This role offers a path to deepen your expertise in stormwater management while gaining exposure to increasingly complex projects and technical challenges.
At RETTEW, you'll have opportunities to:
- Work on stormwater challenges across a wide variety of project types and site conditions.
- Apply hydrologic and hydraulic analysis to real-world design and permitting decisions.
- Gain exposure to projects ranging from redevelopment sites to developments exceeding 100 acres.
- Collaborate with professionals across land development, environmental, survey, transportation, water/wastewater, and other disciplines.
- Continue developing toward PE licensure and greater technical responsibility.
- Mentor developing engineers and designers as your expertise grows.
- Build toward a technical-specialist, project-management, or broader leadership career path based on your strengths and interests.
- Build ownership in RETTEW through our Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP).
Work Environment
- Workplace Designation: Hybrid
- Location: Any approved RETTEW office location
This role combines in-office collaboration, focused technical/design work, virtual coordination, and occasional field visits, client meetings, and municipal or regulatory-agency meetings. Projects may support clients and communities across Pennsylvania and surrounding markets.
