Job Description:

Your Work Shapes the World at Caterpillar Inc.

When you join Caterpillar, you're joining a global team who cares not just about the work we do – but also about each other. We are the makers, problem solvers, and future world builders who are creating stronger, more sustainable communities. We don't just talk about progress and innovation here – we make it happen, with our customers, where we work and live. Together, we are building a better world, so we can all enjoy living in it.

The Chief of Staff enables the Enterprise Strategy team to operate with focus, discipline, and impact. This role works closely with the Vice President of Enterprise Strategy to translate leadership priorities into an integrated agenda, coordinate execution across the team, and ensure that critical strategic initiatives move forward with clear ownership and accountability.

The Chief of Staff serves as a trusted thought partner, integrator, and execution leader. The role connects strategy, people, operating rhythm, and executive communication while helping the broader team anticipate issues, resolve barriers, and maintain alignment with Caterpillar's enterprise priorities.

What You Will Do:

  • Partner with the Vice President of Enterprise Strategy to shape priorities, structure the leadership agenda, and translate strategic direction into actionable plans.
  • Establish and manage the team's operating rhythm, including leadership meetings, strategy reviews, initiative checkpoints, annual planning, and executive updates.
  • Maintain an integrated view of the Enterprise Strategy portfolio, including objectives, milestones, interdependencies, decisions, risks, and resource requirements.
  • Drive follow-through on leadership decisions by establishing clear ownership, tracking commitments, and escalating issues requiring intervention.
  • Coordinate preparation for engagements with Caterpillar senior leadership, the Executive Office, and the Board of Directors.
  • Develop concise, executive-ready communications that synthesize complex strategic topics, clarify decisions, and highlight implications for Caterpillar.
  • Lead selected strategic initiatives and special assignments that require cross-functional coordination, rapid problem solving, or executive attention.
  • Connect work across business strategy, technology strategy, competitive intelligence, and other enterprise functions to improve alignment and reduce duplication.
  • Support team planning, talent priorities, resource allocation, and organizational effectiveness.
  • Build trusted relationships across Caterpillar to facilitate information flow, surface emerging priorities, and accelerate decision making.
  • Act as a constructive challenger, identifying gaps, testing assumptions, and ensuring that the team maintains focus on the highest-value work.

What You Have:

  • Education and Experience: Bachelor's degree, preferably in Business, Finance, Accounting, Economics, Engineering, or a related field; typically 7 or more years of experience in strategy, consulting, finance, operations, transformation, or an executive support role.
  • Strategic Thinking: Ability to understand the broader enterprise context, connect multiple workstreams, and maintain focus on the issues most critical to long-term performance.
  • Business Acumen: Strong understanding of business concepts, financial drivers, organizational dynamics, and executive decision-making processes.
  • Execution Leadership: Demonstrated ability to translate priorities into structured plans, establish accountability, and drive work across organizational boundaries.
  • Stakeholder Management: Ability to build credibility with senior leaders, understand stakeholder needs, and influence outcomes without relying on formal authority.
  • Effective Communication: Exceptional written, verbal, and presentation skills, with the ability to communicate complex information clearly and concisely.
  • Judgment and Discretion: Ability to handle sensitive information, navigate ambiguity, and exercise sound judgment in high-visibility situations.

What Will Set You Apart:

  • MBA or advanced degree.
  • Experience in a corporate strategy group, recognized strategy consulting firm, transformation office, or executive leadership office.
  • Experience supporting senior executives on enterprise-level priorities.
  • Strong knowledge of Caterpillar's businesses, operating model, and strategic priorities.
  • Advanced PowerPoint and Excel capabilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to anticipate leadership needs, identify emerging issues, and act proactively.
  • A highly collaborative working style combined with the confidence to challenge constructively.
