The role – what you’ll do

Barr is seeking a Structural Engineer to join our Minneapolis team. In this hybrid role, you will support our Structural Engineering group by providing design and technical expertise for heavy industrial sites such as power plants, manufacturing, refinery, and mining facilities. You’ll work on multidisciplinary project teams to perform foundation and structural analysis, field inspection and field data collection, develop plans and specifications, write technical reports, and support construction related activities such as responding to field questions and reviewing submittals. This position may include short-term travel for field assignments.

The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, technically skilled, and thrives in a collaborative environment. You bring strong communication and problem-solving abilities, a flexible working style, and a commitment to delivering high-quality engineering solutions that align with Barr’s values.

Your impact – key responsibilities

Technical knowledge: engineering calculations and modeling for a variety of industrial and energy-related structures, including steel and reinforced concrete structures, walls, and foundations.

Project Support: project management, preparing engineering drawings, technical specifications, and design documentation. Contribute to project reports and help develop schedules and cost estimates for engineering solutions. Monitor and manage structural teams to meet schedule and budget commitments. Support developing junior team members to learn new skills and apply them to industrial facility structural challenges.

Fieldwork: participate in site visits and inspections to review and document existing conditions, observe construction activities, and ensure compliance with design intent.

Software: use word processing, spreadsheet, and structural engineering software (AutoCAD, Revit, Advanced Steel, MathCAD, Staad, Risa, IDEA Statica) to support project tasks and team collaboration.

Team collaboration and team development: work closely with a multidisciplinary team of engineers and project managers while developing your skillset in a professional consulting environment. Support multidisciplinary project teams by providing senior leadership, mentoring other staff, and communicating with other project leaders.

Work environment: ability to work in locations that may feature rough terrain typical of construction, manufacturing, or rural outdoor sites with limited accessibility, moving machinery, and other conditions typical of industrial facilities. Candidates must be able to perform job duties with or without reasonable accommodation.

About you – required core competencies
