Description
Summary/Objective :
Have you run a crew in utility installation, underground construction, or excavation? Join Safe Site Utility Services in Glendale, Arizona as a SUE Quality Level A Technician III and put that experience to work in a new way. You'll plan, locate, and lay out small projects, take on the most challenging test holes, and make sure every record your crew delivers is accurate. With limited oversight, you'll keep projects on budget and on schedule while helping develop the next generation of SUE technicians.
We're especially interested in foremen and crew leads from utility installation, underground construction, excavation, pipeline, gas, telecom, electric, water, sewer, or similar utility work. If you've planned the day's work, managed a crew, coordinated activities in the field, and been accountable for production, you already have the skills that are hardest to teach. SUE experience is not required; we'll train you on the Quality Level A methods, locating, and documentation.
What is SUE?
Subsurface Utility Engineering is a structured process used to identify, map, and manage underground utilities during the planning and design phases.
Unlike standard utility locating, SUE goes further by:
- verifying utility positions using multiple detection methods
- assigning quality levels to each finding
- integrating accurate data into engineering and design workflows
Because of this approach, SUE improves decision-making and significantly reduces uncertainty before construction begins.
Duties & Responsibilities:
With limited oversight, you will:
- Independently plan, locate, and lay out assigned projects
- Plan daily field production and adjust resources to keep projects within the established field budget and schedule
- Handle congested corridors, multiple utilities, deep excavations, and unusual utility configurations
- Review plans and identify potential conflicts before excavation
- Perform field-level QA/QC before the crew leaves the site
- Conduct QA/QC of all project field documentation, regardless of who completed it
- Verify that test-hole numbers, ribbon numbers, photographs, and documentation software records correspond
- Properly document inaccessible or unverified test holes and escalate them for up-line assistance before reporting them as unsuccessful
- Track daily quantities, production, delays, and additional work
- Assist with change-order documentation and supporting information
- Train and evaluate Technician I and Technician II employees
- Act as crew lead as needed and assigned
- Follow traffic-control, excavation, confined-space, and general jobsite safety requirements
- Represent Safe Site professionally on client jobsites
Required Qualifications
- Demonstrated ability to independently complete and document Quality Level A work at the Technician II level or equivalent
- Experience with electromagnetic (EM) utility locating and reading utility and construction plans
- Experience working in complex conditions such as congested corridors, deep excavations, and multiple-utility crossings
- Strong organizational skills for tracking production, quantities, and delays
- Ability to train, coach, and evaluate less experienced technicians
- Clear and professional communication skills
- Proficiency with computers, smartphone/tablet-based data collection, and field documentation software
- Commitment to safety for yourself, your crew, and the public
- Comfortable working outdoors year-round, including in Arizona summer heat
- Valid driver's license and clean driving record
- Need to be able to occasionally travel out of town and work overtime.
- Should be able to walk long distances of several miles daily.
- Will sometimes be lifting heavy equipment up to 80 lbs.
