Job Title:

Teaching Professor, Neuroscience, University of San Francisco

Job Summary:

The Neuroscience Program at the University of San Francisco invites applications for a full-time Assistant Teaching Professor position to begin Fall 2027.

Full Job Description:

Job Responsibilities: The successful candidate will be expected to teach neuroscience major courses, serve as a faculty advisor to students in the program, and contribute to other initiatives in service to the department and to the university. The standard teaching load for this position at USF is 24 units per year. Many, but not all, courses are 4 units, so this would amount to a 3-3 teaching load across the academic year. The successful candidate will be able to teach one or more of the program’s distinctively social justice-oriented courses: Neuroscience and the Common Good (a Community-Engaged Learning course), and Neurodiversity, Equity, and Ethics (using a science-and-society lens). They will also teach some subset of the following 4-unit courses: Introduction to Neuroscience (lecture and/or lab), Research Methods & Data Analysis in Neuroscience, and Advanced Research Topics in Neuroscience (a senior capstone course). Additionally, the neuroscience major includes two 1-unit support courses, Preparing for NeuroSuccess and Planning for NeuroCareers, that may constitute part of the candidate’s teaching load as capacity allows. The ideal candidate will also teach and/or contribute to the development of one or more new courses aligned with their specific area of expertise.

Minimum Qualifications: Candidates must possess a PhD in Neuroscience, Biology, Psychology, Cognitive Science, or a related field. ABD candidates will be considered if the degree will be conferred no later than August 2027. This position requires a commitment to excellence in teaching within a culturally diverse environment. A strong record of teaching at the university level and an understanding of and commitment to support the mission of the University of San Francisco are required.

Applicants should submit: a cover letter summarizing interests and qualifications, a curriculum vitae, a statement of teaching philosophy and experience (which should include reflection on teaching in a culturally diverse educational environment), evidence of teaching ability (e.g., sample syllabi, teaching evaluations), and three letters of recommendation (requested upon submission of application). Additional materials may be requested later in the process. Questions can be addressed to NeuroscienceSearch@usfca.edu . For full consideration, applications should be submitted by the priority deadline of January 5, 2027. Review of applications will continue until the position is filled. Applications received on or before January 31, 2027 may still be considered.

We invite candidates to find out more about the Neuroscience program at https://www.usfca.edu/arts-sciences/programs/undergraduate/neuroscience. All new faculty have support from the Center for Teaching Excellence and the Center for Research, Artistic and Scholarly Excellence .
