Position Summary:

The Wasauksing First Nation-Health Department is seeking an innovative, highly motivated, energetic and knowledgeable team player for the position of a mentoring/permanent “Traditional Wellness Practitioner”.

Job Duties & Responsibilities:

Applicants must be currently knowledgeable in providing support to clients requesting assistance in wholistic care and in particular within spiritual and traditional medicinal supports and therapeutic intervention(s).

These supports and interventions will be provided to individual adults; youth (16+years); or to groups.

The practitioner is in possession of documented engagement of training required of a botanist/naturopath/traditional medicine practitioner and currently receives mentorship from such a seasoned and respected practitioner/Medicine Person.

Issues that this practitioner will be expected to provide assistance with, include mental health (trauma/grief); addictions and/or for those seeking spiritual guidance (Rites of Passage etc.) and medicinal/therapeutic supports and to provide referrals where necessary.

The practitioner is preferably trained and knowledgeable of the diversity within and amongst the Indigenous communities within the region and as such, will also accept the knowledge gifts of other spiritual groups from within WFN; the RH Region and across Canada and ensure incorporation of such belief systems into the planning of

Traditional (cultural) programming.

The practitioner will also possess the knowledge needed to provide the community with continuous gathering; preparation and monitoring of the medicines for bottling/packaging and distribution within the Health Department for distribution throughout the community and the region, as well as provide some of the workshops hosted by the WFN-Traditional Wellness Program.

Perform other duties as necessary.

Adhere to all policies and procedures of Wasauksing First Nation and any other relevant policies and procedures from external agencies and partners

Perform other duties within the scope of the position as assigned by the Manager or Supervisor

  • Education & Experience:
  • Minimum academic requirements are high school diploma/GED
  • Additional life and academic experiences/mentoring from a recognized and respected Traditional Practitioner.
  • Understanding of Anishnaabemowin (Ojibway Language) is an asset
  • Other Requirements:
  • Must have physical abilities and attributes consistent with the requirements of a healthcare worker i.e. recent immunizations;
  • Valid Driver's License and reliable personal vehicle
  • Willing to work flexible hours as required, including evenings and weekends
  • Driver’s abstract is required
  • This position requires the individual to work with various families, youth and children. To protect children, youth and vulnerable persons, Wasauksing First Nation requires the individual to provide a vulnerable sector. Or criminal record check
