Job Description

What is the opportunity?

A Chairman’s Council Family Enterprise Advisory team within RBC Dominion Securities is seeking an experienced, Senior Financial Planner to join the practice as an Ultra-High-Net-Worth (UHNW) Financial Planner.

The role is part of a growing, focused advisory team and is intended for an established professional with comprehensive financial planning skills addressing complex UHNW client situations, who is seeking to apply those skills in an entrepreneurial, purpose-driven advisory setting—while benefiting from the scale, brand, and resources of RBC Dominion Securities.

The role partners closely with the Family Enterprise Advisor to deliver high-value, tailored advice and wealth management strategies to Ultra High Net-Worth and High Net Worth clients. As a valued business partner, you will also assist with business development, opportunity spotting, and revenue generation.

RBC Dominion Securities is a relationship-focused investment and wealth management firm that consistently ranks #1 in Canada. We are proud of our collaborative, supportive culture that enables success at every level and equips us to help our clients achieve their financial goals.

What will you do?

Holistic Planning & Strategic Recommendations

  • Deliver exceptional, white-glove and complete financial planning to ultra-high-net-worth clients, with particular focus on our most significant and complex relationships.
  • Understand each client’s broader family circumstances, goals, assets, liabilities, corporate structures, cash flow, tax position, estate considerations, insurance needs, succession, philanthropy and intergenerational objectives, and connect these elements into a clear financial roadmap.
  • Prepare comprehensive plans covering wealth, investment, retirement, tax optimization and risk management.
  • Identify planning needs, opportunities, risks and gaps; consider alternatives and trade-offs; interpret what the numbers mean in the context of the client’s circumstances; and develop thoughtful, practical recommendations.
  • Provide expert knowledge on complex client situations, such as holding companies, employee stock options, individual pension plans, retirement compensation arrangements, and gift and charitable planning.

Tax, Estate & Year-End Planning

  • Conduct structured financial health checks and lead year-end and tax planning for ultra-high-net-worth (AAA) clients before their fiscal or calendar year-end; complete needs-based reviews for AA clients in coordination with advisors.
  • Ensure every client is benefiting from the tax-minimizing options available to them (including RRSPs, TFSAs, IPPs, RCAs, spousal loans, trusts and insurance strategies).
  • Review tax returns to identify tax planning opportunities and help clients and their accountants with year-end tax filing preparation.
  • Develop planning ideas within professional boundaries, and coordinate with accountants and lawyers where their expertise is required for implementation.
  • Work with clients to achieve their charitable, legacy and intergenerational planning goals.

Client Communication & Relationships

  • Communicate findings, strategies, alternatives and recommendations clearly and confidently, in language clients can understand.
  • Lead planning-focused client meetings when appropriate, explain the reasoning and implications behind recommendations, answer questions and establish clear next steps.
  • Foster and strengthen existing high- and ultra-high-net-worth client relationships, contributing to clients’ peace of mind, satisfaction and loyalty through insightful advice and timely action.
  • Deliver educational presentations to clients, prospects and Centres of Influence on wealth management strategies and recent developments (budget changes, tax changes, etc.).

Integration & Collaboration

  • Build strong professional relationships with RBC Family Office specialists, including estate, planning and insurance, and with external professionals such as accountants and lawyers.
  • Coordinate their areas of advice into a cohesive wealth strategy and contribute meaningfully to professional discussions on behalf of clients.
  • Develop strong internal and external networks and referral sources.
  • Promote and support a work environment that inspires innovation, creativity, collaboration, and diversity.

Growth & Practice Excellence

  • Recognize consolidation opportunities, unmet planning needs and areas where relationships can be deepened, contributing to the team’s business development and asset and revenue growth.
  • Maintain high standards of accuracy, compliance, integrity and professionalism throughout the planning process, with clear documentation, appropriate escalation and effective coordination.
  • Maintain up-to-date records of clients’ net worth and cash flow statements.

How we work

Success in this role requires consistent alignment with the following operating expectations:

  • End-to-end ownership: Take responsibility for matters from identification through completion. Maintain momentum, coordinate the necessary people and resources, and ensure nothing is left unresolved or passed along without clear accountability.
  • Proactivity: Anticipate client and team needs, identify opportunities, risks and next steps, and act without waiting for detailed direction. Bring forward an informed perspective, recommendations and possible solutions.
  • Presence & engagement: Be present, accessible and fully engaged at work. The role is office-based five days a week, with reasonable flexibility for family and personal commitments
  • Commitment to outcomes: Manage time according to client, team and business needs rather than treating the workday as strictly clock-based.
  • Continuous learning: Take personal responsibility for developing your technical knowledge, strategic judgment, critical thinking and communication skills, and actively seek development opportunities rather than relying primarily on others to provide instruction.

What do you need to succeed?

  • A self-starter who thrives with autonomy and accountability
  • CPA designation
  • The In-Depth Tax Program
  • A minimum of 8–10+ years of relevant industry experience
  • Experience servicing High-Net-Worth and Ultra-High-Net-Worth clients
  • Deep working knowledge of financial planning, tax, estate, insurance, retirement, corporate and wealth-planning principles
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; uses quantitative analysis and planning tools effectively while recognizing that calculations support, rather than replace, professional judgment
  • A holistic, big-picture thinker who questions assumptions, recognizes what may be missing and understands implications across the client’s overall wealth strategy
  • Communicates complex planning concepts clearly, confidently and appropriately for the audience; listens carefully and builds trust with clients, colleagues, RBC partners and external professionals
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

Nice-to-have

  • CFP designation
  • In-depth tax course
  • A background in one of the following areas would be considered an asset:
  • Senior Tax Manager with a reputable accounting firm
  • Similar role with another wealth management firm
  • Senior Financial Planner
  • A senior role in a reputable Family Office
  • Other Finance Designations
  • Life Insurance Designations

What's in it for you?

We thrive on the challenge to be our best, progressive thinking to keep growing, and working together to deliver trusted advice to help our clients thrive and communities prosper. We care about each other, reaching our potential, making a difference to our communities, and achieving success that is mutual.

  • A comprehensive Total Rewards Program which includes competitive compensation and flexible benefits
  • Leaders who support your development through coaching and mentoring opportunities
  • Ability to make a difference and last
