Description
Position Scope
The Used Equipment Specialist supports the acquisition, evaluation, preparation, and resale of used equipment across all product lines. This role works closely with sales, service, and inventory teams to ensure equipment is accurately assessed, properly prepared, and effectively marketed to meet customer needs and profitability goals.
Requirements
Knowledge and Skill Requirements
- Working knowledge of heavy and compact equipment, including basic mechanical understanding.
- Ability to assess equipment condition, identify repair needs, and document findings.
- Strong communication skills for supporting sales teams and interacting with customers.
- Proficiency with inventory systems, inspection tools, and basic computer applications.
Preferred Qualification(s)
- Experience in equipment sales, rental, service, or used equipment operations.
- Familiarity with Caterpillar equipment or similar product lines.
Education Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Technical training or industry related coursework preferred.
Essential Job Functions
- Assist with equipment inspections, documenting condition, features, and repair needs.
- Support the intake process for trade ins, purchases, and transfers.
- Coordinate with service departments to schedule repairs, cleaning, and reconditioning.
- Maintain accurate equipment records, photos, and listings for resale.
- Provide product information and support to sales representatives and customers.
- Monitor equipment readiness and communicate status updates to internal teams.
Leadership Responsibilities
- Serve as a subject matter resource for used equipment condition and preparation.
- Support continuous improvement efforts in inspection, documentation, and workflow processes.
- Assist in training new team members on inspection and intake procedures when needed.
Preferred Experience and Skills
- One or more years of experience in equipment operations, rental, service, or related fields.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to identify mechanical issues.
- Effective communication and organizational skills.
Physical and Mental Requirements
- Ability to climb on and off machinery for inspections.
- Comfortable working outdoors and in shop environments.
- Ability to lift, carry, or move equipment components as needed.
- Strong observational and problem solving abilities.
Work Environment
- Combination of yard, shop, and office environments.
- Frequent interaction with sales, service, rental, and inventory teams.
- Occasional travel to branch locations or customer sites for inspections or transfers.
Most work is conducted in a comfortable office environment but exposure to site conditions may also occur. Personal protective equipment must be worn in areas as required. Although the work usually is not considered inherently dangerous, employees must be careful while performing onsite services.
