Stanley Black & Decker - UX/UI Design Intern

Valley City, Ohio

Position Summary

Stanley Black & Decker is seeking a motivated, curious, and thoughtful UX/UI Design Intern to join our design team and contribute to the development of user experiences for physical products across our portfolio of trusted brands.

With iconic brands such as DEWALT, CRAFTSMAN, STANLEY, BLACK+DECKER, and Cub Cadet . Stanley Black & Decker designs products that professionals, tradespeople, and consumers rely on every day. This internship offers an opportunity to work alongside experienced designers, engineers, and cross-functional partners to understand how user-centered design is applied to real-world products—from human-machine interfaces and controls to product interfaces.

This role is ideal for a developing designer who wants to apply UX/UI principles beyond traditional digital screens and into the physical world. The intern will support research, ideation, interaction design, prototyping, documentation, and design communication throughout the product development process, while gaining exposure to the technical, business, and manufacturing realities that shape great product experiences.

The ideal candidate is interested in understanding why a design works, not simply how it looks. They are comfortable asking thoughtful questions, exploring multiple solutions, receiving feedback, and clearly communicating their design thinking.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support UX/UI design activities for product interfaces, including human-machine interfaces (HMI), displays, and controls .
  • Assist with user research, competitive analysis, and synthesis of findings to identify design opportunities and inform product decisions.
  • Create wireframes, user flows, interface concepts, prototypes, and visual design explorations that communicate experience direction clearly and effectively.
  • Help translate complex user, technical, and business requirements into clear, intuitive, and usable experiences .
  • Participate in design reviews and communicate design rationale to designers, engineers, product managers, and other stakeholders.
  • Iterate on concepts based on feedback, usability insights, technical constraints, and evolving product requirements.
  • Support the creation and maintenance of design standards, specifications, and supporting documentation to enable consistency across product experiences.
  • Collaborate with industrial design, engineering, product management, and other cross-functional teams throughout the development process.
  • Help prepare presentations and communication materials used to explain design concepts, recommendations, and decisions.
  • Contribute to broader design initiatives and special projects as opportunities arise.

What We’re Looking For

We are looking for a candidate who demonstrates strong potential in the following areas:

  • Strong Communication: Communicates ideas, questions, progress, and challenges clearly with teammates and cross-functional partners.
  • Initiative: Takes ownership of assigned work, moves tasks forward proactively, and knows when to seek clarification or additional direction.
  • Coachability: Welcomes feedback, applies it thoughtfully, and demonstrates a genuine willingness to learn and improve.
  • Problem-Solving Mindset: Looks beyond the surface of a design challenge, considers user needs and real-world constraints, and can explain the reasoning behind design decisions.

Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing a degree in UX/UI Design, Interaction Design, Industrial Design, Human-Computer Interaction, Human Factors, or a related field .
  • Coursework or project experience in user experience, interaction design, product design, interface design, or related disciplines .
  • Familiarity with design and prototyping tools such as Figma, Adobe Creative Cloud, or comparable software .
  • Ability to create and communicate basic wireframes, flows, prototypes, and interface concepts .
  • Strong visual, verbal, and presentation communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, cross-functional environment .
  • A portfolio demonstrating design thinking, problem-solving, and process is preferred.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Exposure to physical product interfaces, embedded systems, or HMI design through coursework, projects, or internships.
  • Familiarity with usability testing, design systems, accessibility principles, or interaction prototyping .
  • Interest in designing for products used in professional, industrial, outdoor, or consumer environments.

What You Will Learn

Through this internship, you will gain practical experience in:

  • Designing experiences for real-world products and users .
  • Applying UX principles within physical product and HMI development .
  • Working within technical, business, and manufacturing constraints .
  • Collaborating with industrial designers, engineers, and product teams .
  • Developing and communicating design rationale to cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Taking a design from early concept through refinement and implementation .
  • Understanding how design standards and systems create consistency across a broader product portfolio.

Why Join Stanley Black & Decker

At Stanley Black & Decker, you will have the opportunity to contribute to products backed by some of the most recognized and trusted brands in the world. You will work in a collaborative environment where design, engineering, and business teams come together to solve real problems for real users.

This internship is designed to provide meaningful, hands-on experience—not only in creating interface concepts, but in understanding how thoughtful design decisions are shaped by user needs, technical feasibility, product strategy, and manufacturing realities. You will be supported by experienced professionals and gain exposure to the end-to-end product development process within a global organization.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is curious, thoughtful, collaborative, and eager to learn. They do not need to know everything coming into the internship. More important is their ability to ask strong questions, think critically about design problems, respond constructively to feedback, and take ownership of their work.

This is an opportunity for a developing designer to build strong fundamentals while applying UX/UI principles to physical products that people use in the real world.
