New hires are typically brought into the organization between $29.00-$34.00/hour, based on experience and education. Waste Service Operator II also averages about 12 days of overtime each year, providing opportunities for increased earnings.
Location & Schedule
In this position you can expect to work on-site and in the field throughout the City and County of Denver, 5 days a week during the training period.
Upon completion of training, you will transition to a four-day, 10-hour shift schedule, with regular overtime opportunities — averaging about 12 days per year — based out of one of our three campuses: Central Platte, Cherry Creek, or Roslyn.

Solid Waste Management provides essential trash collection, hazardous waste removal, recycling, and composting services to single-family homes, multi-family dwellings with up to seven units, municipal facilities.
We are seeking qualified Waste Service Operator IIs to join our team and help deliver these critical services to the Denver community. Duties and responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
Safely operates an automated side loader (ASL) truck to collect and transport waste and recyclable materials along assigned routes, including residential streets, alleys, driveways, parking lots, and other areas with varying traffic and access conditions.
Safely operates a solid waste collection truck (side loader, front loader, roll off, and/or other miscellaneous equipment) to collect waste, recycle, or compost material along a designated route and transfer it to a disposal site. Collection sites may include areas of high traffic, congested roadways, driveways, alleyways, and lots
Loads/unloads waste and/or recycling materials at landfills, recycling centers, or similar facilities.
Utilize route management technology, tablets, and communication systems to document service completion and operational issues.
Interprets rules and regulations governing the nature of the material being collected and container suitability
Identifies unsatisfactory waste containers and tag containers in accordance with applicable departmental procedures
Responds to public inquiries in a courteous manner and provides information within the area of assignment
Completes daily pre/post trip inspection as defined by federal guidelines
Assists in preventative maintenance of equipment by washing and servicing vehicles with water, grease, oil, and fuel.
Prepares routine operating reports, such as material collected, miles driven, and fuel used
Provide guidance and informal training to less experienced operators as assigned.
Responsible for properly reporting uncollected refuse and the completion of collection
Performs other related duties as assigned.
What You’ll Bring
Our ideal candidate has some or all the following experience, skills, and characteristics:
Experience driving and operating trash collection vehicles such as automated side loader, rear loader, front loader, and roll off
Strong commitment to safety and incident prevention.
Strong commitment to teamwork assisting all teams and areas to complete service delivery.
Experience working independently while meeting productivity and service expectations.
Ability to get in and out of vehicles and equipment multiple times per day
Ability to work in varying conditions (inclement weather, dust, fumes, etc.)
Knowledge of the streets within the City and County of Denver
Ability to read and follow route maps
Ability to utilize technology, route management software on electronic device.
Ability to work overtime when needed
Required Minimum Qualifications
Education Requirement: Graduation from high school or possession of a GED, HiSET or TASC Certificate.
Experience Requirement: Two (2) years of experience operating solid waste equipment which must include one (1) year operating ASL or front loader equipment.
Education and Experience Equivalency: Additional appropriate experience may be substituted for the minimum education requirements.
- License/Certification Requirement: This job requires driving. Requires a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL "B") with appropriate endorsements at the time of application.
- Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment.
Other Important Details
At the time of application, candidates are required to hold a valid CDL clear of any restrictions or under prohibited status in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Clearinghouse. This position requires a background check, physical, and drug test.
Applicants for commercial driving positions must demonstrate proficiency in the English language. Commercial drivers must be able to do the following in English:
Converse with the general public
Understand highway traffic signs and signals
Respond to official inquiries
Make entries on reports and records
