WELDER / FABRICATOR

Fontaine Modification | Charlotte, North Carolina

Build It Right. Build It Strong. Build Your Future.

WHO WE ARE

At Fontaine Modification, we do more than modify trucks—we engineer and build solutions that help customers get the most out of their equipment. We bridge the gap between OEM truck manufacturing and the specialized needs of commercial fleets, vocational applications, and demanding work environments.

As part of the Marmon Group, a Berkshire Hathaway company, Fontaine combines decades of industry experience with a commitment to quality, innovation, customer responsiveness, and superior workmanship.

We are looking for skilled, motivated Welders / Fabricators to join our Charlotte team. If you take pride in your craft, enjoy solving hands-on challenges, and want to see the direct impact of your work, this is an opportunity to put your skills to work building solutions that move the heavy truck industry forward.

THE OPPORTUNITY

As a Welder / Fabricator, you will play a hands-on role in modifying heavy-duty trucks and fabricating components to meet customer specifications, engineering requirements, and Fontaine's quality standards.

This is a position for someone who understands that great fabrication requires more than striking an arc. It takes precision, sound judgment, attention to detail, safe work habits, and the ability to turn drawings, instructions, and production requirements into quality workmanship.

You will work alongside experienced technicians, production team members, and leadership to deliver modifications that meet demanding standards for fit, function, durability, and appearance.

At Fontaine, we want people who take ownership, think ahead, work safely, and take pride in delivering quality the first time.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

Welding & Fabrication

  • Perform welding and fabrication activities associated with heavy-duty truck modification, including structural components, brackets, supports, mounting systems, and other truck-related assemblies.
  • Perform MIG welding and other applicable welding processes based on job requirements, qualifications, and approved procedures.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, fabrication drawings, work instructions, measurements, and production specifications.
  • Measure, mark, cut, fit, position, and prepare metal components for welding and assembly.
  • Select appropriate materials, tools, equipment, and welding methods for assigned work.
  • Produce consistent welds that meet applicable workmanship, strength, fit, and appearance requirements.
  • Use hand tools, power tools, cutting equipment, grinders, and other fabrication equipment safely and effectively.
  • Inspect completed work for weld quality, dimensional accuracy, fit, and conformance to specifications.
  • Identify and correct workmanship issues within established procedures and communicate concerns that require additional review or approval.

Quality & Craftsmanship

  • Follow established work instructions, drawings, engineering requirements, and applicable welding procedures.
  • Take ownership of quality by checking work throughout the process—not simply at the end.
  • Prevent defects, rework, material waste, and avoidable production delays through careful preparation and execution.
  • Immediately communicate discrepancies, defective materials, unclear instructions, or conditions that could compromise product quality.
  • Maintain traceability and complete required production or quality documentation.
  • Support corrective actions and problem-solving efforts when defects or recurring fabrication issues are identified.
  • Deliver work that reflects Fontaine's commitment to superior workmanship and customer satisfaction.

Safety & Equipment Responsibility

  • Follow all applicable OSHA requirements, Fontaine safety policies, hot-work requirements, and established safe-work procedures.
  • Use required personal protective equipment, including welding helmets, safety glasses, gloves, protective clothing, hearing protection, and respiratory protection when required.
  • Inspect welding machines, leads, connections, gas equipment, tools, and other assigned equipment before use.
  • Follow approved hot-work controls, including fire-watch requirements, combustible-material controls, and applicable permit procedures.
  • Maintain awareness of surrounding employees, nearby operations, ventilation, sparks, fumes, and potential fire hazards.
  • Keep work areas organized and free of unnecessary obstructions, trip hazards, and accumulated combustible debris.
  • Report unsafe conditions, equipment defects, near misses, and injuries promptly.
  • Stop and escalate work when an unsafe condition or an unapproved modification could create a risk to people, equipment, or product integrity.

Production & Teamwork

  • Complete assigned work safely, accurately, and within established production schedules.
  • Coordinate with supervisors, technicians, and production personnel to maintain efficient workflow.
  • Adapt to changing production priorities while maintaining safety and quality standards.
  • Identify potential delays, material shortages, equipment issues, and technical challenges early.
  • Maintain tools and equipment in good working condition and follow established maintenance and housekeeping practices.
  • Participate in 5S, continuous improvement, safety initiatives, and cross-training opportunities.
  • Contribute to a team culture built on accountability, professionalism, respect, and doing the job right the first time.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

We are looking for a craftsman who takes pride in the work, respects the trade, and understands the importance of producing safe, dependable, high-quality results.

Qualifications and experience:

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Previous welding, fabrication, metalworking, or industrial manufacturing experience preferred; equivalent demonstrated skills and training may be considered.
  • Experience with MIG welding preferred.
  • Ability to read measurements, use precision measuring tools, and interpret basic fabrication drawings or work instructions.
  • Familiarity with metal preparation, cutting, grinding, fitting, positioning, and welding practices.
  • Ability to recognize weld defects and understand the importance of proper fit-up and preparation.
  • Ability to safely operate applicable hand tools, power tools, and fabrication equipment.
  • Strong commitment to workplace safety, quality workmanship, attendance, and dependability.
  • Willingness to learn Fontaine-specific processes, equipment, and quality standards.
  • Ability to work independently when appropriate and collaborate effectively with a production team.

Welding tests or practical skill assessments may be used to evaluate candidates' qualifications for the position.
