What part will you play? If you’re looking for a place where you can make a meaningful difference, you’ve found it.

The work we do at Markel gives people the confidence to move forward and seize opportunities, and you’ll find your fit amongst our global community of optimists and problem-solvers. We’re always pushing each other to go further because we believe that when we realize our potential, we can help others reach theirs.

Join us and play your part in something special!

We are seeking a detail-oriented Business Analyst, Financial Close, Reconciliation & Reporting to join the Financial Systems and Technology team. In this role, you will support Markel's Oracle Enterprise Performance Management (EPM) applications — primarily Financial Consolidation and Close (FCCS), Account Reconciliation (ARCS), and Profitability and Cost Management (PCM) — as well as Finance's broader enterprise reporting capabilities delivered through Oracle Financial Data Integration (FDI) and Power BI. Reporting to the Manager, Oracle EPM & Reporting, you will partner with senior team members, IT, the Oracle R2R Product Owner, and Finance stakeholders to support the day-to-day operation, enhancement, and continuous improvement of the close, reconciliation, and reporting landscape.

This is fundamentally an accounting and process role rather than a systems role. While the Oracle EPM suite and Finance's reporting tools are the platforms through which the work is delivered, sound accounting knowledge is the core competency required for success in this position. Candidates with accounting backgrounds are encouraged to apply; training on the underlying systems will be provided. This is an excellent opportunity for an early-career professional to build deep expertise in Finance systems while growing within a collaborative, global team.

Apply accounting knowledge to review the reasonableness of consolidation results, reconciliation variances, and cost allocation outputs using standard templates, identifying and escalating discrepancies before they affect the close.

Support FP&A partners by helping validate that PCM allocation outputs align with how profitability results are analyzed and presented.

Assist in gathering and documenting business requirements for FCCS, ARCS, PCM, and reporting enhancements, working with senior team members to translate them into clear specifications for the IT functional team.

Build subject matter expertise across the Oracle EPM suite, with a focus on FCCS, ARCS, and PCM, and develop a working understanding of how these applications integrate with upstream and downstream financial systems.

Support the reporting layer connecting Oracle EPM and ERP applications to downstream reporting via Oracle FDI and Power BI, developing working knowledge of data mappings, dimension crosswalks, and load rules in FDI and data models, measures, and refresh logic in Power BI.

Support end-to-end testing for FCCS, ARCS, PCM, and reporting changes by executing test scenarios, documenting results, and tracking issues through to closure.

Act as an initial point of contact for production issues, performing first-level triage using accounting knowledge and coordinating resolution with senior team members and the appropriate technical teams.

Participate in improvement efforts to enhance close, reconciliation, and reporting processes through automation, learning to leverage Oracle's native capabilities (e.g., intelligent matching in Account Reconciliation, automation and AI features within FCCS, and allocation automation within PCM).

Leverage AI and other available tools to support problem solving, and stay current on emerging Oracle AI and automation capabilities.

Follow documented processes and controls; keep process documentation, control evidence, and governance documentation for FCCS, ARCS, PCM, FDI, Power BI, and reporting-related processes complete and up to date.

Assist with responses to external audit queries and the delivery of supporting information requests.

Keep stakeholders informed of work in flight and capacity on a timely basis; proactively ask meaningful questions and build effective working relationships across Finance and IT.

Assist in developing best practice guidance and training materials that support Finance team members in using Oracle EPM and reporting tools.

Proactively identify process gaps and inefficiencies and raise them, along with suggested improvements, to the team.

Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA or CMA preferred but not required.

Experience in a Finance or Accounting role (internship or co-op experience considered), with exposure to the month-end/quarter-end close process, account reconciliations, intercompany eliminations, financial consolidations, and/or FP&A functions such as budgeting, forecasting, and profitability analysis preferred.

Proficiency with Excel and familiarity with ERP reports and standard Power BI outputs; exposure to Oracle products preferred.

Prior experience with Oracle EPM applications (FCCS, ARCS, PCM), Oracle FDI, or financial systems is preferred but not required; training will be provided to the right candidate.

Ability to translate accounting and business needs into clear written requirements, with guidance from senior team members.

Strong attention to detail and organizational skills, with the ability to manage time and priorities effectively and meet deadlines consistently.

Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work effectively across Finance and IT organizations.

Curiosity, a willingness to learn, openness to feedback, and a collaborative, team-oriented approach.

Supportive of an environment that delivers automation and IT-based solutions, with the ability to adapt to new technologies.

Ability to adapt and pivot work responsibilities based on task prioritization.
