About Betterme nt

Betterment is a leading, technology-driven financial services company that offers investing, savings and retirement solutions for retail investors and investment advisors as well as financial wellness solutions, including a 401(k) for small and medium-sized businesses. Our team is passionate about our mission, to empower people to build wealth with confidence and ease. We’re headquartered in NYC and offer hybrid NY-based positions (four days/ week in-office, with no required office days during the summer and winter holidays).

About the role

The Product Engineering teams at Betterment build the applications our customers rely on — from their very first interaction with our platform to every experience once they're logged in. We’re looking for a Mobile Engineer to join us in furthering our mission to make people’s lives better through the delightful, intuitive experiences that have defined Betterment since day one. In this role, you’ll help shape the critical first impression new customers have of Betterment. You’ll own medium-sized features from design to implementation, building and maintaining the high-quality experiences our customers engage with every day.

Our mobile application guides customers through the most important life events in their financial journey. Whether it’s saving to buy a house or planning for retirement, hundreds of thousands of people rely on us to invest and save their money. If you are passionate about financial wellness and are driven to solve complex problems that make saving and investing simple, this role is for you.

Mobile Engineers sit side-by-side with Full Stack Engineers, user experience designers, and product managers to craft our consumer-facing applications. Part of being a member of this team is a love for building products you're proud to share with your friends and family. Our goal is to delight our customers whenever possible with sleek design, simple user experience, and access to sophisticated advice. You’ll be a part of a team that’s tackling difficult questions of scale, architecture and interaction.

This role is based out of our NYC office. Below we've reflected the base salary range for this position. Actual salaries may vary depending on factors including but not limited to location, experience, and performance. The range listed is just one component of Betterment’s total compensation package for employees.

New York City: $140,000 - $160,000

This job may also be eligible for variable compensation in the form of a company incentive bonus.

A day in the life

Own medium-sized features and project milestones end to end, from design to release, partnering with a project lead on planning and adhering to software development best practices in order to ship high quality software continuously and iteratively

Collaborate with our Product & Design teams to develop delightful experiences that guide our customers on their saving and investing journey

You’ll work alongside Fullstack Engineers to help ensure our features and application grow with our business while remaining performant and secure

Teach and Learn. You’ll mentor less experienced teammates through code review and by helping them get unblocked, while learning from senior engineers so you can deepen your domain expertise and grow toward becoming a trusted reviewer

Create efficiency. Our software helps customers save time and money. We maintain it through clean code, rigorous testing, and pragmatic programming

Keep things running. You’ll triage and resolve local and production issues using logs, traces, and metrics, and write clear, brief design docs that build consensus within your team

Hands-on experience using AI coding tools in production work, with the judgment to know when to lean on them, when to verify closely, and when to write it yourself.

Collaborate, with purpose. You’ll work in small groups with other talented thinkers and figure out how to make Betterment’s application even better

Contribute to an environment of open communication, where engineers feel empowered to share ideas and take initiative to solve problems that contribute to achieving company objectives

Work with people who care. Half of our team is made up of engineers, but we believe everyone at Betterment is an engineer with their own tools. We’re a group of talented professionals who pride ourselves in what we do. We’re smart, innovative, energetic, and lots of fun

What we’re looking for

Experience building applications in JavaScript/TypeScript and React Native development and familiarity with the underlying iOS and Android platforms. Experience with Flutter is nice to have!

Additional experience with GraphQL is a plus.

Solid understanding of mobile app architecture and performance, with the ability to make reasonable design decisions for the features you own.

A habit of writing simple, readable, well-tested code that needs minimal rounds of review feedback, with attention to accessibility and performance

Track record of delivering features predictably: balancing scope, complexity, and time, and proactively communicating changes in scope or timelines

Interest in improving the team’s developer experience and mobile platform by contributing to and advocating in engineering forums

Collaborative mindset and excitement to partner with teammates across multiple teams within engineering, design, and product

Passion for software engineering, developer experience, and creating what doesn’t yet exist

Appreciation of agility and pragmatism in software development

The ability to thrive in a startup-like environment, balancing autonomy with collaboration
