Platform Owner
POSITION SUMMARY
This role is charged with named, end-to-end accountability for one or more of Speedcast's strategic TechOps platforms. The Platform Owner is the platform's highest technical authority, responsible for availability, performance, security, cost, and service quality on the platform.
Speedcast is the world's trusted partner for edge compute solutions and critical remote connectivity, enabling operations across the most demanding environments on Earth. We connect vessels, offshore platforms, mining sites, and enterprise customers in places where connectivity is not a convenience. It is an operational necessity.
Day to day, this means executing a disciplined operating cadence, owning the primary vendor relationship, and working across Product Management, Solutions Engineering, and support teams to keep the platform operating and evolving effectively. The Platform Owner co-signs roadmap commitments, defines standard deployment designs, ensures operational readiness at scale, and builds the runbook library and knowledge transfer that allow Tier 1/2 teams to operate the platform sustainably.
This is a senior individual contributor role and the primary growth track for engineers who want to move from execution into ownership, cross-functional leadership, and vendor and customer engagement, without moving into people management. The right candidate is technically deep, operationally disciplined, and comfortable operating as the named authority for a platform that the business depends on.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Serve as the named technical authority and accountable owner for one or more assigned TechOps platforms, responsible for availability, performance, security, cost, and service quality.
Execute a structured operating cadence: daily platform health checks, weekly NOC sync, monthly maintenance and service reporting, quarterly disaster recovery testing and vendor QBRs, and an annual strategy refresh.
Own all Tier 3 incident escalations for the assigned platform; maintain the configuration baseline; lead maintenance windows with full change management discipline, including risk assessment and rollback planning.
Identify and implement tooling and automation improvements to reduce operational toil and improve platform reliability.
Work in close partnership with a paired Product Manager. Product defines the strategic direction, commercial priorities, and scoped roadmap sequencing with user stories.
Provide the operational reality, technical feasibility assessment, and implementation ownership that ensures every roadmap commitment will be delivered and sustainably operated.
Drive performance through operational data and share insights with the Product Manager to inform roadmap conversations, surface feasibility concerns early, and co-own the outcome of every platform-affecting decision. No committed roadmap item proceeds without the Platform Owner's sign-off on operational cost and viability.
Own the primary vendor relationship for the assigned platform, including Technical Account Manager (TAM) engagement, escalation paths, and quarterly business reviews (QBRs).
Represent Speedcast's operational requirements in vendor roadmap discussions; monitor version currency, end-of-life risk, and the competitive landscape.
Manage platform license utilization and drive ongoing cost efficiency.
Conduct monthly service reviews with the NOC and Service Delivery teams, covering platform and customer-level service reports, and contribute to the Monthly Operating Review (MOR).
Act as the technical bridge during customer escalations; support onboarding of new customers and use cases onto the platform.
Provide platform briefings to internal stakeholders and executive audiences as required.
Develop and maintain a comprehensive runbook library in partnership with functional groups, enabling Tier 1/2 teams to resolve the most common incident types independently, without Platform Owner involvement.
Deliver structured knowledge transfer and training to support teams for new features; cross-train to establish sustainable supportability.
Maintain current documentation across architecture, configuration standards, and operational procedures; contribute to Platform Owner standards development for cross-platform consistency and peer review.
Provide Product Management with structured monthly operational signal — escalation patterns, capacity trends, incident root causes, and customer feature requests — as data-driven input to roadmap prioritization.
Co-sign roadmap commitments with the paired Product Manager, providing technical and operational feasibility assessment before items enter the committed roadmap.
Maintain a technical debt register for the platform and proactively surface remediation recommendations.
ACADEMIC QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Telecommunications, or a related field. Equivalent demonstrated experience will be considered in lieu of formal qualification.
EXPERIENCE
Essential
5+ years in network operations, systems engineering, or platform/infrastructure engineering, with demonstrable progression from hands-on delivery into technical ownership and accountability.
Proven Tier 3 incident command experience, with the ability to lead complex, multi-system incidents to resolution under pressure while maintaining clear stakeholder communication.
Direct vendor management experience, including owning technical escalations, QBRs, and named TAM relationships for enterprise or carrier-grade platforms.
Track record of producing high-quality operational documentation — runbooks, architecture notes, configuration standards — used by other teams without further guidance.
Strong ability to implement/understand IP networking and the connectivity stack (TCP/IP, BGP, OSPF, SD-WAN, or equivalent) relevant to the assigned platform's operational context.
Practical experience with change management, ITSM tooling (ServiceNow or equivalent), and operational security practices including patch management and vulnerability triage.
Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to produce clear engineering documentation and present confidently to technical peers, operational teams, and senior stakeholders.
Nice-to-Have
Experience in satellite, maritime, or remote-site connectivity environments (VSAT, LEO/Starlink, OneWeb, or equivalent).
Familiarity with AIOps and observability tooling such as BigPanda or Grafana.
Experience collaborating with or embedded within a Product Management function, contributing operational feasibility input to roadmap decisions.
Experience with automation and working knowledge of any scripting language and any of the following; Terraform, CloudFormation, Puppet, Chef, Ansible, Salt and/or Kubernetes is highly valued.
Desirable
A strong command of English is required. Additional working languages — French, Spanish, Portuguese, or Arabic — are an advantage in Speedcast's multi-national operating environment.
