the posting

LGT Wealth Management was formed around a clear and uncompromising vision – to bring global best practice in building institutional quality investment portfolios to Australian clients.

With a shared passion for building an uncompromised business – we created something new from the ground up. A chance to leave behind the things that weren’t working, while enhancing the things that were. Our authentic and personalised client-first commitment. Our entrepreneurial spirit. Our focus in best-in-class advice. And our intimate understanding of the Australian private wealth landscape.

In 2022 we became a part of the LGT Group, who shared our entrepreneurial spirit, long-term approach and private-ownership model. Today, with the global expertise, stability, and capability of LGT behind us, we can work without being reliant on markets or margins, with a singular focus on giving our clients the advice and deep expertise they need for generations to come.

We are looking for a Principal Engineer to set technical direction and strengthen how software is designed, built and run across LGT Wealth Management Australia. You will work across our core wealth platform, integrations, data and client channels, helping teams deliver secure, resilient and maintainable systems.

Reporting to the Chief Technology Officer, you will be the senior technical authority for engineering. Working with the Enterprise Architect, Solutions Engineering, product and delivery teams, and LGT Group Technology, you will turn architectural direction into practical solutions and tackle our most complex technical challenges.

This is a senior, hands-on individual-contributor role. You will lead through code, design, review and mentoring rather than line management, while remaining accountable for the quality of systems in production.

If you enjoy solving difficult engineering problems, making thoughtful trade-offs and helping other engineers do their best work, this is an opportunity to make a broad impact.

Key Responsibilities

  • Set and evolve engineering direction, standards and practices in line with enterprise architecture and LGT Group standards.
  • Lead the design of complex systems and services, making clear decisions on APIs, data models, integrations, performance and scalability, and recording them in clear architecture decision records.
  • Stay hands-on by writing production-quality code, building prototypes and taking on the highest-risk technical work.
  • Build and improve the engineering paved road, including reference architectures, service templates, shared libraries, CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure-as-code modules.
  • Raise engineering quality through code and design reviews, automated testing, static analysis and clear definitions of done.
  • Champion reliability and operability through observability, resilience practices, service level objectives and incident reviews; act as a senior escalation point for complex production issues.
  • Embed secure-by-design and DevSecOps practices, partnering with Information Security on cybersecurity and regulatory obligations.
  • Make technical debt visible and lead pragmatic modernisation and refactoring with incremental, low-risk migration paths.
  • Improve developer experience and delivery flow, using performance measures and evidence-led experiments, including responsible use of AI-assisted engineering tools.
  • Work with the Enterprise Architect to turn target-state architecture into implementable designs, and assess the technical fit of vendor, SaaS and Group platforms.
  • Provide technical due diligence on vendor, SaaS and Group platforms, covering APIs, extensibility, integration quality, security posture and exit options, and hold partners to agreed engineering standards.
  • Mentor engineers, develop technical leaders and contribute to hiring standards and a strong engineering culture.
  • Advise the Chief Technology Officer and business stakeholders on technical options, trade-offs, risks and recommendations in clear terms.

About You

  • Extensive software engineering experience (typically 12+ years), including significant experience setting technical direction across multiple teams as a principal, staff or senior technical lead.
  • Deep expertise in at least one modern programming language, such as C#/.NET, Java, TypeScript or Python, with a strong record of writing and reviewing production code.
  • Strong distributed systems design skills across APIs, event-driven integrations, data models, performance and resilience.
  • Hands-on cloud-native engineering experience with Azure and/or AWS, including containers, serverless and infrastructure as code.
  • Proven experience with CI/CD, automated testing and modern delivery practices, together with practical observability and incident-management skills.
  • Solid grounding in secure software engineering and the judgement to balance delivery speed, quality, risk and cost.
  • Ability to mentor and influence across teams and vendors without direct authority. Experience in financial services or other regulated environments, wealth platforms, AI-assisted engineering or global technology operating models will be highly regarded.

Qualifications

Relevant tertiary qualifications in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience. Cloud or security certifications would be advantageous.
