- Job Description:
The SAP Platform Lead, aka Staff Enterprise Technology Engineer, is a senior member of the SAP Platforms leadership team. The role shares accountability for the strategy, engineering, delivery and operational performance of bp’s SAP platform estate across on-premises, private cloud, public cloud and SaaS services.
The role combines deep, hands-on SAP technical leadership with portfolio ownership, people leadership, financial stewardship, supplier management, risk governance and executive engagement. It leads complex decisions across SAP S4 RISE, on premise ECCs & BWs, S4 Public, SAP Business AI Platform (BTP) and Joule, integration, data and analytics platforms, engineering toolchains, test automation, observability, application lifecycle management and the wider SAP technology ecosystem.
This is deliberately broader than a specialist engineering role. The successful candidate will progressively take more ownership of major SAP platform accountabilities, deputise for the Principal Enterprise Technology Engineer when required.
Please note that roles based out of SJS or Sunbury will move to Timber Square, Southwark, from Q4 2027.
What you will deliver
- A resilient, secure and cost-effective SAP Platforms estate that reliably supports bp's global business operations and transformation agenda.
- Successful delivery of SAP platform strategy and transformation outcomes, enabling cloud adoption, AI innovation, technology simplification and reduced technical debt.
- High-performing SAP Platform services that consistently meet agreed availability, recoverability, security, compliance and customer experience objectives.
- Optimised technology investments and supplier partnerships, delivering measurable business value through effective financial management, license governance, commercial oversight and strategic vendor engagement.
- A high-performing global SAP Platforms organisation with deep technical capability, clear accountability, engaged teams and effective succession planning.
- Trusted technology leadership and governance, providing strategic direction, informed decision-making and effective management of technology, operational and cyber risks.
- Demonstrated experience identifying, shaping and adopting AI, automation and emerging SAP technologies to deliver measurable business value and operational improvements.
What you will need to be successful
- Extensive experience leading SAP platform engineering squads/teams, operations and transformation delivery within a large, complex global enterprise environment.
- Strong hands-on technical background in SAP technologies, including SAP Basis and SAP technical architecture, with the ability to get into the technical detail when required, solve complex platform issues, challenge engineering decisions and provide technical direction across SAP S/4HANA, HANA, RISE, BTP and associated cloud services.
- Significant experience designing, operating and modernising SAP workloads across public cloud, private cloud and on-premise environments, including practical experience of SAP installations/upgrades, patching, migrations, performance and capacity management, high availability/disaster recovery, connectivity, security and operational troubleshooting.
- Demonstrable experience delivering major SAP transformation initiatives involving SAP S/4HANA, BTP, SAP cloud services, Business AI, Joule and enterprise-scale digital transformation programmes.
- Proven track record of working with globally distributed technology teams, managed service providers and strategic technology partners.
- Demonstrated ownership of business-critical technology services, including operational performance, resilience, disaster recovery, cyber security, compliance and risk management.
- Proven accountability for technology budgets, investment planning, commercial governance, software licensing, supplier performance and vendor management.
- Solid experience managing relationships with SAP, SI Partners and other strategic technology providers, including contract negotiations, critical issues, service reviews and value optimisation.
- Recognised SAP technology domain expert with an established professional network across SAP customers, user groups, industry forums, partners and SAP product organisations, with a reputation for influencing strategy, product direction and industry procedures.
- Demonstrated experience identifying, shaping and implementing AI, automation and emerging SAP technologies to deliver measurable business value and operational improvements.
- Solid ability to influence senior business, technology and supplier partners, translate technical complexity into business outcomes and lead complex multi-functional decisions.
